The sky was overcast when I climbed into my new Wraith and made my way across the city. The temperature had fallen unnaturally cold for the season, but I didn’t mind as much.

The heat was never my thing.

It’d been two days since I’d been trying to get a hold of Nella. Something had happened between her and Macy and I needed to know what it was. Since she wasn’t picking up and never seemed to be home, I was planning to go to her mother’s place when one of Demon’s friends sent me a video with the caption—isn’t this your girl?

Someone in the nail salon had recorded the fight on their phones and posted it online.

I probably should have waited a few days more to face Macy, but I was over being nice about any of this..

When I climbed from the front seat of the new car, I removed my sunglasses and hooked it into the neck of my shirt while slamming the door.

“Hey, Kid.” The man sitting on the front steps greeted me. “How’s it been?”

“Good.” I replied.

“New car?”

“Yeah. You like it?” I smiled at him.

“Rolls Royce, nice.”

“She home?”

He nodded and I shoved a twenty into his hand and let myself into the front lobby. Instead of checking the elevators, I took the steps two at a time to the third floor. The elevators were rarely working and while Macy and I had been friends, I tried talking her into moving. She’d made some crack about m being her sugar daddy.

At the time, I thought it was a joke.

Now, I knew better.

When she opened the door, I shoved by her and waited until she closed the door before leveling my eyes on her.

“What did you do?” I demanded.

“What?”

“Don’t play dumb with me, Macy.” I snapped. “I know you better, remember? Nella, what did you do to Nella?”

“Oh my God.” She chuckled. “You’re here because of her! She attacked me.”

Macy motioned to the corner of her eye that was a strange blackish-purple colour.

The truth was, I didn’t believe that. I may have only known Nella for a short while, through my brother and Chelsea, but I know she wasn’t that kind of person.

“I warned you.” I stalked her across the living room until her back crashed into a movie case. “Leave Nella alone.”

“What does she have that I don’t?” Macy demanded. “I’m a woman too, have you noticed?”

“You’re a woman, yes.” I told her. “But not the kind of woman I want.”

Macy had the nerve to look hurt.

I felt nothing.

“Like I said, stay away from Nella.” I told her again. “I’m not going to warn you again.”

“Why are you protecting her?”
