“Mama?”

Still nothing.

“You do understand your grandson is missing, right?” I glared at her. “I don’t care if you don’t like me. But youwillspeak up if what you have to say affects that little boy. Understand?”

She swallowed.

“Are you going to let him talk to me like that?” Jade asked motioning from me to her daughter.

“You didn’t answer his question.” I told her, ignoring her shock.

“Nella.” Jade gasped. “Do something!”

“What do you want me to do?” Nella snapped. “We’re trying to find Jeremy and you being mute isn’t helping. Either be useful or sit down.”

She gasped dramatically.

I stepped toward her and Jade held up both hands.

“Okay!” She cried out. “I did get a call, but I hung up on them.”

“Mama!” Nella screamed. “What the actual hell is wrong with you? Why would you do that?”

“I didn’t believe them!” She sputtered.

“But he wasn’t home!” Nella yelled. “He wasn’t here! And I’m guessing he hadn’t called to tell you he would be late or sleeping at a friend’s.”

She said nothing.

“That’s what I thought!” Nella roared. “Why would you hang up on people who are saying they have your grandson? That makes zero sense!”

“Did they call your cell or the house phone?” I asked. I wouldn’t address Nella’s rage because she was entitled to it. I would stand back and let her scream and shout because if not, the anger would drive her crazy.

In the meantime, I had every intention of doing what I could for Jeremy.

“House phone.” Jade replied. “What are you doing?”

I was already stalking toward the phone in the living room. I scrolled through the history until I found an anonymous number that came in the night Jeremy supposedly went missing.

I slammed the phone down.

“They blocked the number.” I stared at Nella for a silent moment then pulled out my cell. I dialed the number and waited while it rang.

“Hey sexy thang.”

I chuckled. “Twist, listen I need a favor.”

“Sure, Buttercup. What’s up?” Tess “Twist” Sanchez asked.

“I’m going to give you a phone number.” I told her. “Could you please tell me where the anonymous call came from? It was about five twenty-five p.m.?”

“You said please.” Twist teased. “The reason you’re asking for must be important to you.”

I smiled and read off the phone number Nella had scribbled in my hand. I could hear her fingers tapping away at her keyboard.

“Is she pretty?” Twist asked.

“Is who pretty?”
