We all gathered to discuss what was to come next. Kid didn’t like the idea of me going in with them, but since I knew the property well, he reluctantly agreed.
Demon waited for Jia to come over before joining us.
We all hunched down to rehash everything.
With Sean waiting as the look out, Demon and Mamba took the southside of the property.
Emmitt was a creature of habit and never changed his codes. I gave it to them and while Demon and Mamba headed off, Kid and I entered through the back garden.
Just before we hurried across the yard, an armed guard arrived on his rounds. Kid peeled from the darkness like some kind of specter and held the man in a chokehold until he was out cold.
He disarmed him, then rolled his body over a slight embankment.
“Is he dead?” I wanted to know in a hoarse whisper.
“No.” He replied, checking the gun.
“Do you know how to use a gun?” I asked Kid.
“My brother was in the military.” Kid replied. “He taught me a few things. Don’t worry.”
But how could I not worry?
We continued on our search, taking out men and a couple of women, as we went.
One man, I kicked in the groin, covered his mouth with one hand as he fell to the floor. I took no pity on the woman who attacked me after.
I gripped a handful of her hair, braced my shoulders into her chest and rammed her into the wall.
She crumbled, out cold, to the floor.
I took her gun.
It was heavy in my hand—almost as if I was carrying the weight of the world.
I wondered fleetingly if I would be able to pull the trigger.
My hand hurt but I couldn’t stop.
We went through the house, room by room, finding nothing.
The last place to look was the basement but I stopped Kid as we made our way by Emmitt’s office and heard him talking. From the one-sided conversation, I realized he was on the phone.
“You let him take the will?” Emmitt was saying.
I knew immediately who he was speaking. Kid had brought me my sister’s original will and told me how and where he’d gotten it. Emmitt was speaking to my mother, and my heart shattered.
During this whole ordeal, I’d held out hope she had nothing to do with this. But her having a conversation on the phone with Emmitt told me all I needed to know. When I stepped forward, Kid grabbed my arm and motioned for us to move away from the door.
“We know where he is.” Kid whispered. “And we know most of his men are incapacitated. Let’s go look for Jeremy.”
I will deal with you later.
I nodded and followed him down the winding stairs. The basement was divided in two. The front side that sat at the foot of the stairs was empty. The walls looked as if someone had punched holes into them and another person had patched them up.
I snuck my way to the door and peered into the other side. Jeremy was asleep on the floor. I exhaled and rushed over to him, covered his mouth and shook him.
Th first thing he did was panicked and tried struggling away from me.
