The bullet lodged itself into the wall. Kid surged forward and took my ex down like a linebacker. He hooked his shoulders to Emmitt’s midsection, and they tumbled over the desk.

“Kid!” I screamed and ran to the other end of the desk to look over.

Kid was busy slamming a hand into Emmitt’s face. “That’s for Jeremy.”

He punched him again.

“That’s for Nel.”

Kid punched him again.

“That’s for being an asshole.”

Kid punched him again.

“And that’s for shooting at us.”

Emmitt spat up a little blood.

Kid climbed off him but not before using his pinky to pick up Emmitt’s gun and stepping back.

“Get up.” I commanded.

“Bitch.” Emmitt flung at me.

Angry, I kicked Emmitt in the ribs a couple of times. He grabbed for my leg, but I merely added all my weight on it, forcing him to let me go as I used my other leg to stomp on his chest.

“Don’t make her repeat herself.” Mamba said from where he was now sitting on the desk.

“The cops are coming.” Emmitt spat. “Someone must have heard the shots.”

“Nice try.” I told him. “I used to live here, remember? You could set off a bomb in this place and no one would hear. Now, get—the—fuck—up!”

It took a few minutes to settle things.

I finally had Emmitt sitting on a chair in the living-room. The Arrowood brothers sat around the space, watching me while I questioned Emmitt who was now much more forthcoming with what happened to make him take Jeremy.

Taking the will hadn’t been enough. My mother was determined to ruin Jeremy, to break him emotionally. She wanted to make his life hell as way of punishing Calie and I.

“She was angry you didn’t marry me.” Emmitt managed through his swollen lips. “She thought I was her meal ticket, and our marriage would have put her on easy street. When we broke up…”

“She blamed Nella for taking away her meal street.” Kid spoke up.

“Yes.” Emmitt exhaled. “The best way to hurt you—take something you love away. In this case, Jeremy.”

“Why was she angry at Calie?” Demon questioned.

“Calie left all her money to Jeremy.” Emmitt explained. “Jade thought she was going to get more than she did. She merely slept with the lawyer Calie had at the time and bingo—tampered will.”

“And the damage to Kid’s car?” I was sick to my stomach.

“I had nothing to do with that.” Emmitt promised. “That was Jade. The plan was to make Nella have no other choice but to come to me for help.”

“Then you’d be her knight in shining armour.” Demon laughed.

“But she didn’t count on you meddling creatures.” Emmitt looked over to where Demon was sitting on the back of an expensive looking sofa with his size twelves on the cushions.

I knew how much Emmitt hated that.
