We scrambled from the vehicle and followed Ray on foot.

As he moved through the street, Ray glanced behind him repeatedly. Each time he did, Jesse and I found a way to act inconspicuous. At one point, he pulled me into his chest, dropped his back against the wall of a small convenience store—pretending we were lovers.

It was merely pretend, but I couldn’t help the way being against him made me feel. His body was hard under that shirt and his palm was large and perfect against my hip.

My nipples tightened and I quickly glanced over my shoulder to check on Ray. Thankful he was preoccupied with where he was going again, I pushed away from Jesse.

We continued after Ray.

Finally, he crossed the front lawn of a small house and let himself inside. It couldn’t have been more than a two-bedroom place and from what I could see, didn’t have a basement.

We approached and I peered through the front window. A single light was on and Ray seemed to be speaking to a man whose face was turned away from us. Eventually, he turned, and I frowned.

“I take it you know who that is?” Jesse whispered.

“Yes.” I replied. “I’ll explain later. We should go.”

We’d seen enough and the risk was too great, especially since we couldn’t hear what they were talking about. We hurried back the way we’d come, and I was once more wondering what in the hell I’d gotten myself into.

Ray goes off to visit Blink the moment I’d left him. And why was Blink in Montenegro? He should be back State side with the rest of Striker’s team.

I explained that to Jesse.

“So, that guy Ray met is a part of the team that lost Paul.” Jesse seemed as if he was trying to get things straight in his head. “Shouldn’t we follow him to find out where Paul is?”

“I don’t think Paul is still in Montenegro. But there’s a connection.”

“How are you so sure?”

“Because if he was here, Ray would have told me.”

“Ray was drunk.” Jesse snapped. “Can we really trust anything he says? Afterall, this is the same guy who knew this Blink guy was here and said nothing.”

“I told you I thought he was hiding something.” I muttered. “I just have to tackle this another way.”

“Okay.” Jesse nodded. “We recalibrate.”

I understood his frustration. “If your brother was here, Ray knew I wouldn’t hesitate to come back for him. He doesn’t want that. With Ray, it’s all about self preservation. He doesn’t handle pain well. But if Paul is here, Ray has no idea. I’m hoping once we hit Mountain Head, we’ll know more.”

Chapter 6

Jesse

Just before we left for some espionage, Frost managed to get a video call back from Black Widow. When she saw me, the pilot grinned.

“Jesse.” She greeted me. “Lovely to see you again.”

“Really?” I smirked at her. “Because I can distinctly remember Mozart telling me you basically told him to eat shit and die.”

Black Widow laughed out loud, a melodic sound that made me smile wider.

“No hard feelings?” She asked.

“Not at all.” I replied. It was hard to be angry at her. She was protecting her person.

“You sure?” Black Widow asked.

I waved. “It’s hard to stay mad at such a beautiful woman.”
