I had a thing for her—an attraction that delved under my skin It was the kind of thing that kept me up at nights while the base was dead silent. It forced me to stare up at the starry sky, wondering if Frost and I could be more than what we were.

The answer was always glaring and painful—it was a resounding and heartbreaking—no.

But I hadn’t listened to that thought. I flittered back and forth over the line I shouldn’t cross inside my head, harbouring feelings I knew I should let go. By the time I pulled my head out of the sand, it had been too late.

We’d gone into a strange place in our relationship where it was impossible to get out of again without breaking our own hearts.

Still, the others became more and more vocal about her place within the SEALs.

It made no difference to them that she never wanted to be a SEAL. Hell, I didn’t think it mattered to Frost what branch of the military she was in. Her only thing was, she wanted to work.

She wanted to protect her country.

But most importantly, she wanted to be left alone.

Even with my complicated feelings for her, I was still on her side—always would be on her side.

I wanted her to best all of them.

Dumbing down SEAL training was never a thought to cross my mind with her. She tried everything and never quit until she smashed it.

If something was taking a little time for her to catch on to, Frost would merely grin and look over at me, her eyes dancing mischievously while shouting, “I’m making it my bitch, Sir!”

But I knew there was some darkness in her. I only had to look into her eyes to know she was the kind of woman who could firebomb someone’s existence for messing with her. She could burn their world down and smile while doing it.

It was confirmed with what happened after losing her place in the Army. Frost figured if she was going to go out, she’d go out with a fight. She beat the shit out of the leader of her group, left him in the hospital and walked away.

The man was three times her size. Yet, she dropped him like the useless excuse of a human being he was. By the time I pulled her off him, he’d curled himself into a ball, covered in blood. I thought at first the blood was hers—but afterward, we realized it was all his.

The rage in her eyes when I pulled her off him wasn’t the kind of anger I had been used to. That look had changed me in irreparable ways. As I watched her walk away, I knew something had shifted in her—something had shifted so far to the darkness that we would never be the same again.

Ever.

Usually, she’d be in serious trouble.

But they couldn’t arrest her without having to explain what they’d done to her and the public didn’t like it when organizations betray a female warrior.

And because of that, I was hesitant to unleash her on the world again. I knew if—and that was a huge if—she agreed to help, we’d be picking up bodies all over Europe.

But we had no choice.

The truth was, we had to run with the devil we knew—even though we barely knew Frost.

“Okay.” I exhaled. “Chances are this is going to come back to bite me. But point us toward Widow.”

“A carrier in the Adriatic.” Tex was typing again. “A friend of mine is the commanding officer. I'll find you a ride.”

“So, how do you know this Frost?” Jesse asked as we sat beside each other on the helicopter.

“I met her at a gym when she’d just graduated from West Point.” I replied.

“So, she’s Army.”

“Yes.” I replied. “But there’s more to that story and I really don’t have time to explain. Just know, if she agrees to this, your brother is as good as found.”
