With him I felt like a queen—a woman.

Was that even possible?

After we were showered and dried again, I dressed in one of his t-shirts and crawled into bed with him. He pulled me into his arms, and I closed my eyes, shifting my body to get as comfortable as I could. His warm breath washed against my forehead.

I drifted off to sleep with no troubles at all. And when the dreams came, they were all of Mack, of me being pregnant with his child, of being happy in his arms.

For the first time ever, I allowed myself to stay within the dream—wanting it all to be real.

Mack Salazaar

The next day,we made it to the first checkpoint Swede set up for us without an issue. Cage helped us transfer our things from the SUV to the new vehicle then we stopped at a small restaurant to get something to eat. It was out of the way.

Jager sat in a way that her back wasn’t to any of the ways into the place. Cage nibbled at way at his food, picking around the things he wasn’t familiar with if he tasted them and didn’t like it. For the most part, he ate the meat, the rice and most of the vegetables. If he wasn’t familiar with something, he’d ask me.

I’d explain it to him, and he’d taste it.

When he asked if he could get a second helping, I nodded.

As he was speaking with the waitress, I looked over at Jager to catch her staring at me. Though I was curious as to what was happening in her head, I smiled at her. Jager bowed her head, but I didn’t miss the smile that graced her lips before she lifted her straw to drink from her soda.

Once we were finished, Cage and I went into the men’s room while Jager visited the ladies. We were finished before she was and when we were about to step into the seating area of the place, I noticed a man speaking with the waitress.

The woman looked over to our table, then glanced around as if trying to find us. I eased Cage behind my back and used my body to push him backward down the corridor.

“What’s wrong?” Cage asked.

“We have company.” I replied, knocking on the door where I knew Jager was. “I need you to keep your head down, and stay behind me or Jager, got it?”

Cage nodded.

Jager stepped out and arched a brow. “Can’t a girl use the lil girl’s room in private? I wasn’t gone that long.”

“We have company.” I reported.

Immediately the smile was off her face, and she was unbuttoning her coat for easy access to her gun. She inched her way to the edge of the hall and peered out into the restaurant before backing down the hall to us.

“Okay, there’s a window in the girl’s room.” She explained. “It’s big enough to climb through. I’ll go through first, make sure the way is clear then Cage.”

“How are we getting out a window?” Cage asked.

“It’s over the sink.” She told him simply. “Once we’re outside, we run like hell to the car.”

But that was easier said than done. The two men in the restaurant were only a few of the men after Cage. The moment we were all outside, we were swarmed.

We sandwiched Cage in between us as the men attacked. I hadn’t gotten into a brawl with my leg, but I wasn’t about to let that stop me. I now had to protect Cage and watch Jager’s back.

After I took one guy out by punching him in the gut then dropping the metal back of my prosthetic hard against the back of his neck, I turned in time to see Jager using one bad guy as a human shield as gunshots rang out around us.

She palmed the weapon and moved faster than I’d ever been able to move, cutting down three men with three bullets.

I grabbed the gun from the guy I’d taken out, kept my frame in front of Cage’s and fired at the guy that was sneaking up behind him. The bullet cut through the center of his forehead, and he fell face-first into the dirt.

By the time we reached our vehicle again, I was pushing Cage into the backseat while Jager went around the car, checking the wheel wells and any place they may have hidden a bomb or a tracker.

“We’re clear.” She called.

I climbed in behind the wheel as she dove into the passenger seat. The others in the restaurant rushed out and began firing at us as I shoved the car into gear and slammed on the gas.
