Cage didn’t seem to hear a thing I’d said. He merely kept staring at Jager.

I understood it. He was a teenage boy looking at a pretty girl. Hell, I’d done the same thing when I first met her.

“Who are you?” Cage asked her.

“Arin.” Jager replied. “I’m here as back-up.”

He nodded.

Miriam returned. She’d changed and I assumed she had someone look at her wound. When I focused, I noticed she was holding a tray of food. I realized for the first time just how hungry I had been. We hadn’t really eaten since we left Casablanca

We all sat on the floor in the middle of the small space. After washing her hands in a bowl, we ate together, none of us speaking about the massive purple elephants in the room.

How were we going to get out?

Who was trying to kill Cage and why?

Would we make it out alive?

I kept my eyes on Cage. When he was focusing on the food, he was nervous, his hands shook. A few times he missed his mouth and dropped curry on the front of his shirt. His frustration was evident when he groaned each time before sighing dramatically.

When Jager reached over to help him, he seemed stronger, almost as if he didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of her.

Yeah—definitely a young boy in front of a pretty girl.

I smiled and looked down into my plate.

After we ate, Cage went to use the bathroom and I leaned back to look at Jager.

“So, I say we stay here tonight.” I tossed an idea out there. “Tomorrow night we make a run for the border. There we’ll have to find a way back into Casablanca.”

“Casablanca?” Miriam asked. “What about plane?”

I shook my head, but Jager explained why we couldn’t take the plane back. The pilot would have to land somewhere close to his hanger where the plane would be searched. If we were found on board, he’d be in trouble.

No, the only way out again was over land.

Jager agreed to the plan.

When Cage came back, he climbed into the bed and in no time at all he was asleep. I wondered when the last time was he actually had a good night’s sleep but didn’t ask.

Miriam wanted to take us to another small room to sleep but I didn’t want to leave him. Sure, he’d been by himself with these people for a while. But now that he was in my sights, I didn’t want to just wander off.

After a short conversation with Jager, Miriam left us alone and I turned to see Jager had gotten comfortable on the floor with her head on the cushion she’d been sitting on earlier. I tried to do the same but couldn’t seem to fall asleep.

I checked my phone but there were no bars.

“They’re usin’ a jammer.” Jager told me.

I rolled my head to the side to see she still had her eyes closed.

“What?” I asked.

She shifted to look at me. “To protect everyone here, they block all the signals. It makes sense. What’s the matter?”

“I can’t sleep.” I replied. “I have a lot on my mind.”

“Like what?”
