“You watch your back, okay?” He told me.

I nodded.

He framed my cheeks and kissed me gently. When he released me to step away, I caught his arm and pulled him back to me for another, more meaningful kiss.

Without looking back, I let myself out the door, pulled my hood over my head and shoved my hands into my pockets.

The air around me was stifling. The street wasn’t as busy as I thought it should be and that worried me. Humans were creatures of habit—they went for lunch at the same time, slept at the same time, had sex at the same moments—this street should have been buzzing.

Either way, I found a place to sit at an outdoor patio, ordered a soft drink and some sugar cookies. I crunched into one and smiled. They were some of the most delicious things I’d ever put in my mouth.

I kept my eyes on the entrance to the motel, watching people to go in and out. Though some of them looked sketchy, they weren’t assassins out to kill a kid sketchy.

After a while, I ordered two dozen of the cookies and headed back. Instead of entering through the front door, I jimmied a backdoor, hurried up the rickety stairs, a few of them. at the top of the stairs, I pushed my head out into the halls and checked both directions. Seeing it was clear, I headed down to our door and let myself.

“Anything?” Mack asked.

I shook my head but handed Cage the box of cookies.

“The area is strangely quiet.” I reported. “Hermes isn’t back yet?”

“No.” Tianna replied. “He found a really chatty barmaid who seems to think he’s hot.”

I chuckled.

“You’re not worried he might—” Mack asked.

Tianna shook her head. “Hermes is my man. He knows that.”

Mack smiled. “I want that.”

“What? A crazy girlfriend with an itchy trigger finger?” Tianna grinned.

“Not crazy.” Mack laughed. “You love him. He knows that—he feels it and won’t do anything to ruin that for himself.”

Tianna blushed. “Thanks for saying that. I really love him.”

I left the room to wash my hands and when I came back, Mack and Cage were hanging out where the television was. Mack was busy banging his palm into the side of the old television and muttering under his breath and Cage was sitting entirely too close to it.

I laughed softly.

“Men—if it doesn’t work, brute force it is.” Tianna giggled.

“Sounds ‘bout right.”

“So.” Tianna leaned in. “What’s the deal between you and Hottie McHottie over there?”

I glanced over to where Mack was now sitting with Cage and intently watching a soccer game.

MY cheeks heated and I rubbed the back of my neck. “I’m not sure.”

“That’s not at all like you.” Tianna pointed out. “As long as I’ve known you, you never date. I mean, it’s about damn time. But you went into this without a plan?”

“I didn’t really have a choice.” I leaned closer to her. “Have you ever been around a man, and he doesn’t have to say anythin’ to make you feel like the sexiest woman in a room? All he has to do is look at you in a certain way and you just—melt?”

“Have you met Hermes?” Tianna asked. “He makes me feel that way every single day.”

“What did you do the first time you felt it?” I asked. “I’m not used to it—never been that kinda girl.”
