It was an innocent enough touch. I knew he meant nothing by it, but my body didn’t care. I had to bite my bottom lip to keep from trembling.

Seated, a waitress hurried over to pour us coffee into white mugs and placed cream, sugar, and milks in the center of the table.

“Hey, Sal.” She greeted him. “Who’s your friend?”

“Um…” Mack started.

“Arin.” I shook her hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Daisy. Does this mean you’re off the market then, Sal?” Daisy wanted to know before leaning toward me to fake a whisper. “I’ve been telling him for a while he needed to find a good woman.”

Mack who’d been sipping from his coffee, choked.

“We don’t know yet.” I told her. “He’s auditionin’ right now.”

“Now, wait a minute.” Mack protested.

“Well, in that case.” Daisy giggled. “He’s a good guy. Entirely too serious though.”

“I’m right here.” Mack held up a hand and waved.

I grinned impishly at him.

Mack merely shook his head and lifted his coffee once more to his lips.

“What would you suggest for good eatin’?” I asked her.

“The avocado buster.” She leaned over to point to it on the menu. “You wouldn’t think beef and avocado goes together—but yum.”

I chuckled. “What does it come with?”

“It comes with fries or onion rings.” Daisy told me.

“Good, I’ll have that, but instead of fries, I’d like the onion rings.”

“And for you, Sal?”

Mack cleared his throat. “BLT with fries.”

Daisy grinned at the both of us like a proud matchmaker would and sauntered off. Mack stared at me, his eyes telling me nothing which was part sexy, part infuriating—mostly infuriating. I was used to being able to read a man, tell what he was thinking.

But this man was like a blank canvas with a storm underneath.

“Sorry about that.” Mack laughed shyly. “She thinks all my problems would be solved if I found a wife.”

“Maybe she could volunteer.”

“She has.” Mack replied. “She’s just not my type.”

“Your type?” I cleared my throat. “Out of curiosity—what is your type.”

“Someone with a little bite.”

I gasped.

He winked at me, and I had to take a few swallows from my coffee to clear the lump in my throat and to keep from combusting.

“Swede told me you’re the only American to go into the Badlands and make it out.” Mack began.
