“I am going there… but not on my own. Or I hope not. I want you to come with me. As my partner.”

I open my eyes and sit up. Daniel’s gaze is steady as it meets mine, everything about him is sure and resolute.

“But your dad…? Don’t you need to give him time?”

“Slow and cautious steps you mean?” His lips lift in a lopsided smile. “I think we’re beyond that.” He twists and leans over for this mobile, on the bedside cabinet. Scrolling through, he hands it across. “I got this, early this morning. I want you to read it.”

It’s a mobile phone, that’s all, nothing but plastic and metal and tiny shreds of wire, so I don’t know why it should feel so portentous in my hand. Until I read the message.

“So… will you?”

I swallow, and nod. “I’d love to meet your parents. If you’re sure?”

He pulls me down into him and brushes his lips across mine.

“Of course I’m sure. Let me show you how sure I am.”

My breath escapes me on a long, shuddering sigh and, as my eyes drift to a close, show me is exactly what I let him do.
