Daniel sniffs, loud and exaggerated. “You’ve been to the pub. This is the second drink related incident. If you’ve got a problem—”

“I haven’t got a problem,” I bite back at him.Except for you.

I manage to stagger to my feet, before I fall back onto my bed. I’m clumsy and uncoordinated and if he doesn’t believe me I can’t blame him.

“I tripped, and that’s all. It was an accident. And all I had were two pints. All evening. Do I look drunk, or sound it?”

He snorts, full of derision. “I told you before—”

“I know, and maybe I deserved it—”

“Maybe? You think it was just maybe?”

“I was doing my best to be a considerate roommate.” I force the words out through gritted teeth.

“A considerate roommate wouldn’t stumble in at—” He checks his watch, laying on top of the cabinet and swears under his breath. “It’s one-thirty in the morning. We’ve got to be up at six in order to—”

“Herd some idiot sheep onto a boat and row them across to a small island. I know.”

Daniel’s eyes crinkle at the edges and his lips twitch and for a moment I think he’s going to laugh. I’m proved wrong.

“I don’t suffer fools, Cosmo, nor sloppy behaviour. You know that better than most. God alone knows why, but I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt. This time.”

He snaps off the light and turns away from me, tugging the duvet up to his chin.

I undress and crawl into bed as quickly and quietly as I can and curl up into a ball, asking myself how the hell am I going to get through the next few days.
