My skin itches with nerves.
“Really? What else were they saying?”
My palms start to sweat and, surreptitiously, I wipe them on my thighs.
“Nothing. You were lucky he was there to help you. If you’d been my partner, I’d have left you there to fight off the bears on your own.”
“You overflow with warmth and human kindness, Fiona.”
“Hmm, don’t tell anybody, will you? Let’s keep it our little secret. Better get on with this, I suppose. Ready to brainstorm?”
I nod, eager to put our conversation behind us.
My head’s buzzing. If Fiona’s seen the thaw between Daniel and me, then others would have too. A thaw is one thing, but anything more…? It’s a sign, though, to be careful. No, it’s more than that. It’s a screeching alarm and a big red flag flying in the air. The change — orachange — has been noticed and for both our sakes we need to be on our guard.
Perhaps I won’t be pushing him over the boardroom desk after all — or not until after hours, when the offices are empty.
