“Something about all the cheering and yelling clued me in,” I say as he relieves me of the tray and presses a kiss to my lips.

“You shouldn’t be carrying such heavy things, baby.”

“I was only trying to help, daddy,” I say, my voice low so he’s the only one who can hear.

“Mmm. Why don’t you sit your pretty self right there so I can look at my girl while I cook?”

“My pleasure,” I say, relaxing on the outdoor setting. Jayden and Dermot are having a debate about the sudden disappearance of the pitcher from the Washington Nationals, one saying he’s had a mental breakdown while the other insists he ran off with the owner’s stepdaughter. Aniyah is riveted.

I can’t help but smile as I look around and think about what my life would have been like without Noah in it. I think I’d still be looking after my mother, still trying to find my way to college, still feeling lost and alone and uncared for.

Noah’s and my relationship might seem unconventional to most, but to us, it’s a perfect fit. I love him more than anything, and I feel sure that I’ll be feeling that way for many years to come.
