“It doesn’t matter where we’re at, babe. We can be at the racetrack, and I swear I’d stop driving to dance this dance with you.”
I rested my head against his chest as he held my hand. The grocery store wasn’t crowded, but there were enough people in there for me to be embarrassed. I caught sight of a few people glancing at us like we’d lost our minds.
We were somewhere between the milk and eggs, and we were slow dancing on aisle eighteen in the dairy section. After several seconds, I forgot about people looking at us, and I really didn’t care about the two girls who had their phones held out, recording us. Nothing mattered except for Dominic and me and the space we created for ourselves.
He sang softly in my ear as he lowered his hands around my waist. I reached behind me and lifted them back up, because he thought he was slick. His hands were well on their way to my ass.
He laughed and kissed my forehead and then my jaw before he brushed his lips against mine.
“I can’t believe you’re doing this,” I whispered.
“I’ll never be ashamed to show you what you mean to me. Just know that.”
“Thank you. I love you more.” I tipped up on my toes, pressed my lips against his, and gave him the sweetest of kisses before I pulled away as the song ended.
We stood side by side, pushing the grocery cart.
“Baby, I just wanna tell y’all that y’all give my heart something to hold on to. I thought that love like that died a long time ago. When I see a man like you loving his woman the way you love her, it lets me know that there’s still hope.”
I smiled at the older woman as she smiled brightly at Dominic and me.
“Thank you, ma’am,” he replied with a big grin.
“Vonda Maddox, baby,” she stated proudly.
“Ms. Vonda, my name is Dominic, and this is my girlfriend, Charly.”
“You keep being the same impressive young man you’ve always been. You could teach some of these older men a thing or two, that’s for sho.”
“GiGi, are you harassing these good folks?” a dark-skinned, beautiful, plus-sized woman asked, coming around to our aisle.
“Wynter, you know I would never do nothing like that,” she declared, frowning and fanning herself with a pack of shredded cheese.
“Mm-hmm. Come on. Frost and I have been looking all over for you.”
I was curious about the name until I saw the owner of Black Diamonds walk around the corner with his usual mug in place until his eyes landed on the younger woman. He wrapped his arm around the woman and looked at the older one. “You good, GiGi?” he asked with a warm smile that melted my heart. I had never seen him this soft before.
“Yeah, baby. Just telling this sweet couple how they are making my heart feel good,” Vonda Maddox aka GiGi answered.
Frost’s gaze swung to us. “Charlyse. Hey, girl.”
“Hi, Frost,” I greeted shyly as Dominic’s arm tightened around my waist possessively.
“Baby, this is Charlyse. We call her Charly. She’s one of our bartenders at Black Diamonds,” he introduced. “Charly, this is my wife, Wynter.”
I stretched out my hand, and she took it in hers. “Nice to meet you,” I stated.
“Nice to meet you as well.”
I introduced Dominic to them before we said our goodbyes. But not before we heard GiGi mutter, “Mm-hmm. I need to see if he got an uncle or brother or something. GiGi needs her chimney swept.”
“GiGi!” Frost and Wynter exclaimed just as Dominic and I walked away.
My eyes widened, and I tried not to choke off my giggle as Dominic smirked and snickered.
