We’ve just climbed into the SUV when Holden’s phone starts ringing. “Hello?” He looks at the display and pulls it back to his ear. “I can’t hear you, Bright eyes.” He flips it to speakerphone, his eyes wide.
“We’re pinned down! We got ambushed!” The sound of gunfire fills the car, and I wince.
“We’re on our way,” Micah says, but the line goes dead before he gets the words out.
My heart feels like it’s being pulled in twenty different directions. We finally have an address for Chelsea, but the rest of my family is still in danger. “What about Chelsea?” I say quietly.
“Fuck!” Micah says, slapping the steering wheel. “I don’t know what to fucking do!”
Neither do I, and I feel like whatever decision we make, it will be the wrong one.
Fuck.
Chapter6
Kai
It’s finally time to get the hell out of this place. We start making our way down the hallway, but I can’t help but to feel like the walls are closing in on me. Everyone is giving me a wide berth, sensing that I’m on the verge of ripping out of my skin. It feels too tight, and my jeans feel suffocating. The other stuff they did to me doesn’t even fucking matter. Charlie figured out my one weakness and used it against me.
I shove all that out of my mind and focus on getting Chelsea back.Jesus fuck. I don’t even want to think about what her being back in Brady’s hands means. I just know that when I finally get my hands on him, I’m going to peel his skin from his bones.
“Are you good?” Axel asks quietly. He’s one of the few people who’s already seen me in that situation, so there’s no use in lying. I shake my head. “I’m sorry—”
“Shut the fuck up, Axel,” I growl. “This isn’t your fault.”
“The fuck it isn’t. If I would have—”
“Would have what?” Cole interrupts, still bearing most of Axel’s weight. “Not gone after him? Not kicked him out in the first place? You did everything right. Quit your pity party.”
“I’m not having a goddamn pity party.” Axel drops his arm from Cole’s shoulder and pushes him away. “I can walk by myself.”
“Now you’re just throwing a tantrum,” Nolan cuts in. Axel whirls around to face him, and Nolan shrugs. “They’re right. This is on Charlie. Shut up and let Cole help you.”
I watch Gage bite his lip to keep from laughing. He snorts, and Les elbows him in the ribs, making him grunt. “Can we move?” she says dryly. “We’ve been here too long as it is.”
Cole doesn’t give Axel a chance to argue before he pulls Axel’s arm back over his shoulder. “We need to get your leg looked at. It’s been long enough for infection to set in.”
“We need to find Chelsea,” Axel argues.
“No shit. But you still have a fucking bullet in your leg. You need to sit this one out,” Cole says.
“You’re not the fucking boss of me, Cole.”
“I am when you’re out of commission, and you are, starting now. You’re no good to her like this or dead.”
Silence falls over us again, and minutes later, we’re finally walking out into the fresh air. I take a deep breath and feel myself relax a little. If I can’t walk down a hallway, I have no fucking idea how I’m going to ride in a car. I was fucked up before, but that has nothing on what’s going through my head now.
The last thing I remember is the car tipping over the hill. It landed on my side first, and my head must have hit the window because I was out cold. Then I woke up to pain shooting through my body and realized they locked me in a cage, stabbing me with a zap cane modified for maximum pain. They would stick it through the bars and shock me repeatedly with it. At some point, I sank into my mind, where all I saw was Chelsea. It’s the only thing that kept the panic at bay, so I wouldn’t give them what they wanted and beg to be set free. In my head, Chelsea would rub my cheek and tell me to focus on her, so I did. Even though she wasn’t really there, she still saved my fucking life. Now I need to return the favor.
We get three steps outside, and Les pulls a Glock from her holster and hands it to me. “Thanks.”
She smiles and nods. “I figured you’d feel better if you were carrying.” She hangs back a little. Sensing she wants to talk to me, I do the same. “You can tell me this is none of my business because it’s not. I have no clue what you’re going through right now, Kai, but if you ever need someone to talk to, you should talk to Dex.”
“Why?”
“He had something happen to him, as I’m sure you know from the scars, but it messed him up about being touched. It was so bad that if you accidentally did touch him, he would swing on you. Just ask Gage.” She laughs at that. “Anyway, I just think you should talk to him.”
She walks back to catch up with the group, and I take in what she just said. I’ve seen Dex with her, and he can’t keep his hands off of her now. I’ve gotten through this before, and I’m determined to do it again. I can’t imagine another day going by that I can’t hold Chelsea in my arms. Or Sean, for that matter.Fucking Sean. When I heard his voice filter through the wall I’d built, I could have fucking kissed him. We were taken with the knowledge that Cole and Sean were dead, so at first, I thought it was a trick until the asshole called me an overgrown gorilla. There’s no faking that.
