“You aren’t a pussy, Kai,” I say harsher than I mean to. “You lived through your fear. Keyword lived. You didn’t fold under the pressure, and you didn’t fucking give up. Give yourself some credit. You’ll get there.”
“He’s right.” We both look up at the sound of Sean’s voice. He sits on the other side of the table. “Chelsea’s not going to let you give in to this, but she’s also not going to push you. Me, on the other hand? I will gladly take you punching me in the face over this moping shit.” Kai’s face turns red, and Sean grins. “Much better. Give me the anger.”
“Fuck off,” Kai barks, flopping back in his chair and grabbing his plate.
“Eat like a good boy, Gorilla,” Sean teases, and I choke on a laugh.
“Fuck you,” Kai says with a lot less heat. When he takes a bite of his food, I see the relief on Sean’s face. Even though they fight like an old married couple, there’s a lot of love there. Sean’s not going to let Kai sink into his own mind. He and Chelsea might be the only ones who can stop it this time.
About ten minutes later, everyone piles outside, ready to get this game plan in place. Chelsea sits on Axel’s good leg and throws her legs over Nolan’s. Nolan looks surprised for a second, then starts massaging her calves.Thisis what the Saviors have needed. Someone to ground us and make us see that good shit actually does still exist in this world.
“Holden and Nolan have already started running facial recognition on cameras in Abbs Valley, Grover, and Forest Grove,” Axel starts. “Our first priority is Brady.”
“Axel,” Chelsea says in exasperation. “He isn’t the one you should be looking for first. Charlie is the bigger threat.”
“Yeah, to me. Brady’s the threat against you. He dies first and soon. This isn’t up for discussion, Cupcake. We have eyes on finding Charlie too.”
“We should have killed him at that creepy fucking house,” Sean adds.
“No. You made the right choice by getting her out,” Axel argues. “But everyone needs to stay vigilant. He’s gunning for the Abbs Valley crews hard too. You guys have kids to think about now.”
“We already have plans in place,” Les says. “You need to worry about taking care of your family. Let us worry about ours. You always have a safe haven in Abbs Valley if shit gets too deep. We have plenty of places to hide you.”
Axel looks at Chelsea, and she pushes his face away. “Don’t even think about it. I’m not going to hide away like some precious princess while you guys fight the demons. If it gets to that point, I won’t argue. But we aren’t there, and I’m not leaving you guys.”
“I don’t think there’s much else we can do until we get a lead,” Nolan says. “My guess is Charlie is hiding somewhere deep again. Especially after Axel fucked up his face.”
“Brady doesn’t have his daddy to run back to,” Sean replies. “I’m curious about where he’s going to hide now.”
“I’ll send Ari’s crew to Grover to check. We need to put that house out of commission. We’re headed back to Chelsea’s.”
“I went over it from top to bottom last night,” Holden relays. “There’s no spyware in that house. I checked her computers too. It’s clean and probably the safest. Nolan’s going to up her security when he gets there with the stuff I gave him.”
“This house is too open,” Les agrees. “Take her home.”
Chelsea looks at me and around at all of her guys and smiles. “Let’s go home.”
Chapter9
Nolan
When we get back to Chelsea’s, I go straight to the office and get my computer running. Her security is good, but I need to make it better. Axel called a guy he knows that’s going to come to upgrade her cameras and motion detectors. So far, Holden and I haven’t had any hits on facial recognition, and frustrated isn’t a strong enough word for what I feel.
Seeing Chelsea last night made everything that I want snap into place. I want a place with this family and her. And I’ll fight like hell to make sure that nothing else happens to us. We’ve been through enough, and it’s time to end this.
I open Chelsea’s security system and the precautions she uses to keep from getting hacked. I put in everything I’ve ever learned on my own and from Holden. If anyone tried to get in here, I’d know.
The door to the office opens, and I don’t even turn around because I know it’s probably Axel. A soft hand rubs across my neck, and I look up into Chelsea’s green eyes.
“What are you doing?”
“Upgrading.” I pull the other chair beside me and pull her gently to sit. “Hang out with me?”
“Of course.” She tucks her legs into the chair and squints at the screen. “I still have no idea what you’re doing.”
“This is your main frame. It’s set up to pick up anyone trying to get in here that shouldn’t be.”
“What happens if someone gets in?”
