“Naughty boy,” he says gently. “I don’t feel good about this, and I’d feel better if you were safe in the car.”

“I’ll feel better if you don’t go alone.”

We stand there in a face-off until Axel finally sighs. He nods his head for me to follow him, and I fall in line behind him. We head the way Cole was going first and see him crouched down behind a row of cars. His head whips up at the same time his automatic does. He drops it when he sees us, and we squat beside him. “What the fuck happened to the comms?”

“We don’t know,” I admit. “Phones and trackers are also down.”

“Have you seen Sean or Kai?” Axel asks.

Cole shakes his head. “No. Kai and I split when Sean went to sweep the building. Where did the explosion come from?”

“I don’t know unless Mateo blew something up,” Axel answers. I can tell that’s what he’s hoping, but that is probably not the case. Axel wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he was the reason any of the other guys got hurt. None of us will. “We need to find Kai and then Sean.”

Cole nods, and we silently make our way to the other side of the warehouse where Kai should be. He’s nowhere to be seen, so we move closer. As soon as we get two feet from the door to the warehouse, it busts open, and Sean comes running out. He sees us and almost wilts with relief. “What the hell was that noise?”

Axel shakes his head. “That’s what we’re trying to figure out, but we need to find Kai first.”

We make our way around the warehouse and find Kai in the middle of a fight with three other guys. We take off at a dead sprint, and I pop off a shot right when one of the guys aims a knife at Kai’s stomach. It hits him in the shoulder, making him stumble back. I roll my shoulders back and take a deep breath, still not used to this type of adrenaline. Axel and Cole stop, raise their guns, pull the trigger, and two of the guys fall into a heap. Kai swings around on the other one and shoves a knife up through the bottom of the guy’s jaw into his mouth. He dangles for a second, and then Kai rips the knife free, letting him fall to the ground.

“You good, Gorilla?”

Kai swings wild eyes around on us with his chest heaving. “Yeah. They ambushed me trying to find you.”

“I’m fine. Inside is empty except for the weapons and a couple of dead guards. I left one tied up though to question.”

“We need to make it fast and find out what the fuck is going on,” Axel demands, pulling the warehouse door open. Sean points out the guard he tied up, and Axel crouches beside him. As soon as he whips his mask off, the guy’s eyes widen. “Good. You know who I am, so we can make this quick. Where’s Charlie?”

The guy swallows and shakes his head. “We don’t know. He just told us to guard the warehouse.”

“Does he have any more around here?”

“There’s one about ten miles from here, but as far as I know, it’s empty.”

“Do you know where Charlie lives?”

“No, man. He doesn’t tell us stuff like that.”

“Have you ever seen a brunette woman with him?” Kai asks, making the guy gulp when he looks up at him. I know he’s asking about Amber, and it’s fucking smart.

“Several.”

“Do you know their names?”

The guy shakes his head. “They don’t stay around for long except for one, and he calls her Little bit.”

“What does she look like?” I ask.

“Long brown hair, green eyes. Kind of young for Charlie.” This could be a coincidence, but I store the information away for later.

“What do you know about Brady Stinson?” Axel continues. “Know where he is?”

“Hell no. That dude gives me the fucking creeps. I’ve also seen him with the brunette.”

Axel stands up, and the guy flinches. “Cole, grab one of those grenade launchers and set this bitch on fire. We need to move.”

“Wait!” the guy calls out when we take a couple of steps toward the door. “I told you everything I know!”

“Yeah, but you work for Charlie, and I can’t let you live.”
