“Good plan. I’m going to head back to the house for a little while to spend some time with Willow and Luca. We’ll just switch out periodically until you guys have to leave to hit Amber’s apartment. Just for the record, if that bitch is shady, I’m going to kill her in her sleep.”
“You won’t get the chance because Chelsea will beat you to it,” Sean argues. “Or one of us.”
“I have a bad feeling about her,” Les admits. “Some things aren’t adding up.”
“I’d like to hear it from a woman’s point of view,” I say.
“Well, for one, if she were my best friend, I wouldn’t have taken no for an answer when she said she couldn’t see me. For two, it seems awfully convenient that she just showed up in Chelsea’s life as a damsel in distress and then wouldn’t go away. According to Chelsea, she tried to push her away. For three, Chelsea knows very little about her background because Amber said there wasn’t much to tell, but she wanted to know everything about Chelsea. If Charlie had the reach to plant Brady, he could have easily done it with Amber to keep tabs on Chels since she got away.”
“Why not just send Brady back after her?” Sean wonders.
“Because he couldn’t have gotten information that way. Charlie knew that Axel and Cole were on their way back to her.”
It hits me like a ton of bricks. “You think he led us back here on purpose?”
Les shrugs. “Yeah. What better way than to take you all out, including Chels? He didn’t count on you closing ranks around her or having us as backup. He underestimated everyone, and something tells me that’s not something Charlie will take too well.”
“It just made him throw me under the bus.” That still pisses me the fuck off that Charlie would use me to mess with Axel’s head. I saw the look on Axel’s face when he first said it, and he almost believed him. But like I told Axel, there’s no way in hell I’d ever betray him or have any part in Chelsea falling into Brady’s hands.
“He’s trying whatever he can to make Axel slip up. Axel’s better at this than he is, so he’s trying to level the playing field. Him going after Gray is another way because he knew he didn’t get to Axel through you.”
“Gray will skin him alive,” Kai says. “I saw what he did to the guy who tried to hurt his sisters.”
“Is this the guy you mutilated afterward?” Zane asks.
Kai shrugs. “I sent them an even bigger warning not to fuck around. There are some lines you don’t cross, and those motherfuckers crossed every single one.”
“I’m with you on that,” Ryder agrees. “As long as we stay as a unit, I think we’ll be fine.”
Sean’s phone starts ringing, and he slides to answer after seeing Ghost’s name flash across the screen. “What’s up?”
“Amber’s on the move. She had scrubs on, so I’m assuming she’s going to work. Nik’s tailing her to make sure.”
I’m up and out of my chair to tell Axel. I run up the stairs and crack open the door to the bedroom he’s in. He’s cuddled with Chelsea, and she looks like she’s fast asleep. I creep to the bed and gently shake Axel’s shoulder. “Hey, you need to wake up.”
His eyes pop open and flash to mine. “What’s wrong?”
“Ghost called. Amber looks like she’s heading to work. We need to get ready to roll out.” He kisses Chelsea’s forehead and slides from the bed. My eyes bug out when I see the scratch and bite marks all over him. “Holy fuck, dude. What the hell did she do to you?”
Axel’s sexy grin makes my stomach flip. “She made me hers. Now get out before you wake her up.” He shoves me through the door, and I follow him into the other room. He gets clothes from his bag and starts putting them on.
“Your back is fucked,” I laugh. He has angry red claw marks from her fingernails, starting from his shoulders to mid back.
“It hurts like a bitch, too, but well worth it. How long ago did Ghost call?”
“Sean’s on the phone with him now. I came as soon as he called.”
Axel nods, and I follow him downstairs. When Les sees him, she gives him a shit-eating grin, and he rolls his eyes. “What did he say, Sean?”
“Nik went to tail her to make sure she goes to work. When he gets confirmation, he’ll text me. But she had scrubs on, so I’m going to say she went to work.” Sean’s phone chimes, and he looks back at Axel. “She went to the hospital. Nik’s going to sit on her so he can notify us if she leaves.”
“You guys go, and I’ll stay here with Chelsea,” Les says, shooing us toward the door. “I’ll tell her what’s going on when she comes out of her coma.”
Axel does that grin again. “It might be awhile.”
He just had to say that right as I got the mental image from my head.
