“Fuck,” I choke out. There’s no use in trying to fight it. I let it go again and bury my face in Kai’s big chest. He rubs my back, whispering nonsense the whole time. Any time he feels I need it, he just holds me closer like he’s trying to put me back together.

I finally get myself under control and try to pull away, embarrassed. Kai hooks his hand on my chin and jerks my face back to him. “Don’t you dare do that. I love you, Sean, good or bad.” He takes a tissue and mops my face up. I can’t help but laugh, and he gives me that lopsided grin. “Are you good?”

I search around in myself and find that I am actually good now. I just needed to finally let go of everything, just like Ghost said. “Yeah, Gorilla.”

Ghost turns around in his seat. “Did you find out anything?”

“Not really. Charlie dealt with Grant more.”

“What happened in there, Sean?” Ghost asks softly.

“I did what you said. I let go of the past. He said he wished he was a better father, and I told him that I hope he dies a painful death.”

“He deserves it,” Ghost growls. “I know we didn’t share everything that happened, but I know he was just as bad as Grant.”

I shrug. “Probably. But I’m fine now, I swear—no more breakdowns.” I turn to Kai. “Thank you for coming.”

“Anytime you need me, you know where to find me.”

I definitely do, and it’s sharing the rest of his life with me.

Chapter36

Cole

As soon as Sean walks back through the door with Ghost and Kai, I know his meeting didn’t go well with his dad. I was against it at first, but I followed his logic that his dad might know something.

He flops on the loveseat beside me and lays his head on my lap. Kai scoots under his legs and gives me a look letting me know without words that it’s bad. Everyone is outside, but I stayed inside, waiting for Sean to come back.

“He didn’t know anything,” Sean says. He sounds tired, and I start to get even more worried. “He has liver cancer. I called the prison after I broke the fuck down, and they said it was stage four. There’s nothing they can do.”

“I’m sorry, Sean.” I run my fingers through his thick hair, and his eyes flutter closed. Within minutes, he’s sound asleep.

“It was bad, Cole. I’ve never seen him like that.”

“No matter how fucked up my dad was, it still hurt when he died. I can’t explain it because it will never make any sense. Sean’s got one of the biggest hearts, and sometimes he doesn’t know how to deal with that.”

“Why didn’t you go with him?”

“Because I saw how bad you wanted to. We all need each other for different things. That’s why this works.”

“I never thought in a million years I’d fall in love with his little punk-ass.”

I laugh at that. “Sean has a way of pulling you in and never letting go. Be glad you didn’t fight it like I did. I’m just glad he didn’t hate me after that.”

“He told me once that he was in love with you.” I jerk my head to Kai in surprise. “We used to talk all the time. Well, he talked, and I listened. He’s always felt comfortable with me. I guess that’s why he brought me around Chelsea.”

“He wanted you to feel what he felt with her.”

“From the first moment, I knew she was different.” Kai doesn’t usually talk about stuff like this, so I make sure my full attention is on him. “She didn’t stare at my scars, but when she did look, it wasn’t out of pity. It was out of understanding. All the stuff I hated about myself, she liked the most. Sean didn’t have to share her with me or us. We owe a lot to him that he was willing to give us a piece of her.” Kai surprises me even more when he laces his fingers with Sean’s and lays them on his stomach. “I’m pretty sure I fell in love with her the first night I met her. She was so easy to talk to and drop-dead fucking gorgeous. She had on this red dress that’s been seared into my brain.”

“When did you know with Sean?”

“That part took me a while. We didn’t touch each other at first, but he laid down a challenge in the kitchen one day, and I knew then that I wanted him, too. Falling in love with him happened gradually. I started looking at him differently, getting nervous when we actually did touch, and then I thought he was dead. When I heard his voice from that cage, I knew without a doubt that I loved him because no matter how scared I was, there was still relief that he was alive.” Kai looks at me, and I see the determination in his eyes. “I want Charlie’s head on a stick for everything that he’s ever done. We all deserve the peace to live our lives no matter the bad shit that we’ve done.”

“That chance is right around the corner. Zane is staking out at Charlie’s compound, and we’re taking down the houses. Tonight.” We came to an agreement after Kai, Sean, and Ghost left that as soon as they got back, we were heading out. The threat of him throwing out the tip to the FBI is still over our heads, but we can’t just sit around anymore. “Zane confirmed about thirty minutes ago that Charlie is there.”

“Should we just go after him?”
