“You didn’t raise me,” Axel scoffs. “I raised myself. Now, where the fuck are you?”
We start searching every room that we come to, and I get a sick feeling the more we go when they’re empty. “The FBI should be on their way to Alessa Poletti’s house by now. I wonder who they’ll scoop up there?”
“You’re lying. Get the hell out here.”
“You want to test me? Leave now, and I’ll let you warn them.”
I can see the look on Axel’s face, wondering if he’s telling the truth. If he called in those tips, then everyone in that house is getting arrested, leaving Chelsea to defend herself. Since he cut our comms, we have no way to tell them to get the fuck out. I know Les is ready for anything, so I hope she’s made an escape plan.
Footsteps sound behind us, and we whirl around, guns up. “It’s just me,” Van says, holding his hands up. Van pulls his mask up and shakes his head. “Don’t do it,” he mouths. “She has a plan.”
Axel nods. We start moving again, listening to the gunshots echoing around the compound. I hate that I don’t have ears on everyone, but I know they’re trained. We get to the last two doors in the hallway, and Axel signals for me to follow him while sending the others into the next room.
I position myself at his back. He counts down from three on his fingers, and when he hits one, he shoves the door open. Charlie jumps up from his chair, already aiming an automatic at us. Guards pour in from all sides, leaving us surrounded. “Couldn’t resist, could you?” He hits a button on the desk, and the door seals behind us, blocking us off from the others. “Take their weapons.”
Axel and I exchange a glance, and I subtly nod, letting him know I’m ready for anything. Axel holds his gun out like he’s going to let the guard grab it, and when he reaches for it, Axel’s moving. He swings his leg in a roundhouse kick, knocking the dumb fucker on his ass. The guards rush us, and we start fighting with everything we have. I try to reach for my automatic, but it’s ripped from my neck, pissing me off. As soon as I get one guy down, two more are coming after me. I lose sight of Axel in the scuffle, and the next thing I know, I’m lying face-first on the floor with a gun to the back of my head. I turn my head to the side, and Axel’s in the same position. I let my body sag, making them think that I gave up the fight. But there’s no way in hell that we aren’t going home to Chelsea today.
Boots come into my vision, and Charlie pulls back, kicking Axel right in the face. “You really thought you could beat me?!”
Axel spits blood on his boots, laughing. “I almost did, and it didn’t take me even a quarter of the men you’ve been hiding behind.”
“Get him on his knees,” Charlie barks, and the guards haul Axel up. “You never stood a chance. You fell for every goddamn trap that I laid for you. Now everyone that you brought is going down with you. Including your little faggot.”
“Fuck. You,” Axel grits out.
I start subtly looking around to see how many guards are in the room—ten by my count, or at least of who I can see. Odds are still in our favor as long as we don’t let them bind our hands. If Charlie calls in more guards, though, we’re fucked.
“You two stay,” Charlie orders. “The rest, go kill everyone who decided to come intomyhome.”Wrong move. I can already see it on Axel’s face that as soon as we’re alone with Charlie, it’s over.
We wait until the guards are gone before Axel makes a move. He jumps to his feet, still squatting, and spins around while kicking his leg out. The guard hits the floor with a thud. I reach up behind me, wrap my arms around the neck of the dumbass behind me, and flip him over my shoulder. I see Charlie take off out of the corner of my eye. “I have them. Go!”
Axel takes off, hitting Charlie with a flying tackle. I know from getting to know Axel that he and Charlie are evenly matched. Axel pulls back his fist to punch Charlie, and Charlie bucks him off. I look at the guards, and I’m split between staying with them and helping Axel. I pull the knife from my sheath and stab the one closest to me. When I’m jerking the knife out, the other one jumps up, tackling me to the floor and making me lose my knife. I hear fists hitting flesh and hope with everything in me that Axel has the upper hand.
The guard comes at me hard, and I see a glint of metal clenched in his fist. I roll at the last second as a blade comes right toward my face. I scramble backward, making him follow me. I grab the automatic from the floor, aim, and fire. His body jerks, and I roll to my feet before he can land on top of me.
“Fuck you!” Axel yells. I whirl around, and he has Charlie down on the floor, pummeling his face in. “You goddamn sick piece of shit!”
Charlie’s fight is getting weaker, and I wait for Axel to deliver the last blow. “If you kill me, you’ll never find her,” Charlie coughs.
“Who?” Axel growls. The next words out of his mouth freeze us in our tracks.
“Chelsea.”
Chapter39
Chelsea
Listening to the guys on comms is a rush. But as soon as they breached the building, we lost contact. I paced a hole in the floor before I excused myself to the pool house. With the comms still in my ear just in case, I crawl into the bed where we made love last night. No matter which way I move, their different scents fill my nose, and it’s calming in a way. I don’t want to break down, but the longer it goes on with dead silence, the more I want to curl in a ball and die.
I start daydreaming about our life together when my phone rings. I frantically pull it from my pocket, hoping it’s one of the guys. My heart sinks when it shows up as an unknown caller. I almost ignore it but think better of it just in case one of the guys got a phone to get a call out.
“Hello?” I say, voice shaking.
“If you want to see them alive, meet me.”Amber.My blood starts boiling, and I have to bite my tongue so I can find out what she’s up to.
“Why would I do that?”
“We’re best friends. Remember?” Amber says in a sickly sweet voice. She sounds nothing like the girl I’ve known for the past two years. How could I have been so stupid?
