I wrap my hand around Charlie’s throat in warning. “You think I’m stupid? Have her bring Chelsea here.”
“That’s not how this works, Axel. Let me go, and you can have your woman.”
“There’s no way Chelsea would leave Les’ protection,” Kai reasons. “No matter what.”
Charlie laughs again. “She would if she thought your lives were in danger. Brady was right. She really is fucking stupid.”
I tighten my hand. “Shut up.” I can’t fucking think when he’s rambling. Would Chelsea really risk herself to save us? The answer to that question is yes. I just need to find out if Charlie’s telling the truth. “Prove it.”
“Hit the button on the phone to unmute it.” He points to his desk, and Kai walks over. He stabs the button, and we wait for confirmation.
“…everything was fine until you ran from Brady. That was a beautifully laid plan, and you just had to go fuck it up. That’s when Charlie put me in your path that night. Those guys you fought off? Were Charlie’s guys. Did your dumbass really think that anyone would latch onto you like I did? For whatever reason, your guys have, but that’s going to end soon enough. Maybe I’ll keep a couple for myself. Possibly Axel. Like father, like son.” Amber giggles, and I wait to hear the voice I know I’m going to. “And the big one? I bet he fucks like a beast.”
“They will never want you after what you’ve done.” Chelsea’s voice sounds strong but with a slight quiver. Why would you do this, Cupcake?I have no idea what to do to get us out of this.
“Never say never. I have my ways.”
“What about the guys from the bar? If Charlie’s your lover, why the hookups?”
“You really are a dense bitch, aren’t you? They weren’t hookups, they were recruits. Charlie couldn’t do it himself, so I went and got them for him.” So that’s how he got all these assholes to work for him. He dangled Amber in front of them.
“He used you, Amber, because he was hiding from Axel.”
“Charlie would never use me. He loves me.”
“Charlie doesn’t love anyone. He’s not capable of it. He didn’t even love his own son.”
“That’s because Axel is weak. He fell right into the traps time and time again. Charlie set everything up, and Axel wasn’t smart enough to figure it out. Charlie knew as soon as you were away from Brady that Axel would come running back. Sean wasn’t a fluke, Chelsea. You were meant to meet him that night.” Sean? There’s no goddamn way. I saw how he was when he first met her. That’s nothing you can fake.
“You guys put Sean there?”
“Yes. Someone like Sean doesn’t want girls like you. Any time he was away from you, he’d meet me. We’d fuck and then make fun of everything that happened while you guys were together. Sean’s been the inside man the entire time. Well, besides me. You have to admit, it worked flawlessly up until now.” I’m screaming in my head for her not to believe Amber. I know where Sean was all the time. If he wasn’t with Chelsea, he was with us until he left to live with her permanently. A little bit of doubt slips through the cracks, and I look back at Kai. His face is thunderous, but I don’t want to ask him what he thinks. I’ll never give Charlie the satisfaction of knowing that he won. If he ever did.
“What about Kai?” Chelsea’s voice is small now, and I want to fold her in my arms, telling her this is all bullshit.
“I’d love to take credit for that, but it was Sean’s idea. You were so desperate for attention that he had to call in for backup so that he could deal with it all.” I start shaking my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts that Sean betrayed me—betrayedus.“How do you think I have footage on the inside? Sean made sure that your hacker’s plan didn’t work. He’s probably already working on the rest of your guys to come to our side. Sean’s very convincing.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Think about it. There’s no way that we got all that information without help from someone. Charlie and I had a good laugh that we almost convinced Axel it was Cole. But the one you never suspected was the reason all along. We were wishing Axel would put a bullet in Cole.”
The line goes completely silent, and then I hear someone throwing up. I can feel Chelsea’s heart breaking from here.
“You believe me now, don’t you?” Amber mocks. “I can’t blame you for being blindsided. Sean is a fucking God in bed. After he left you, he’d come fuck me so hard—”
A roar of rage comes from the line, and the sound of a thud. Someone starts banging on the door. “We need to go!” Micah yells. “This place is rigged to blow!”
“If I die, so do you. What’s your decision?” Charlie asks. I haul back and punch him as hard as I can, knocking him out.
I flip him over my shoulder and smack the button that he used to lock us down. It whirls, and the lock clicks open. Kai jerks the door open, and everyone is waiting for us. “Amber has Chelsea,” I say and take off running.
“What?!” Cole exclaims, jogging to catch up. “He could be lying.”
“We have proof,” Kai growls. “Where’s Sean?”
“He’s waiting outside with Ghost. Why?”
“We have fucking problems,” I answer. I have no idea if Amber is telling the truth or if she was just trying to hurt Chelsea. But what if he’s been the leak this entire time, and I never even looked into him? I put my team, myfamily,at risk because I didn’t think anyone on my side would betray me.
