“Yep. They really should have better security measures. Anyway, we can plant all the paperwork we want to, but we still need someone to pronounce him dead. Kai is on the phone with Les to see if they have some pull with someone there.”
“Say this works, then what?” Chelsea asks.
“We follow their protocol,” Axel answers. “Nolan found the floor plans, and there’s an exit close to the morgue. We can take him out that way and come straight here. Since we aren’t sure if we can trust Keon, I asked Banger if he’ll steal us an ambulance, and he said he would.”
Chelsea looks horrified. “Does he have to go into a body bag?”
Cole chuckles. “Temporarily until we have him in the ambulance.”
“Les is on her way to grease some pockets,” Kai announces, walking into the living room. “She said money will talk, no matter what we’re up to. She’ll let us know when it’s go time.” He kisses the top of Chelsea’s head, lingering longer than normal. Her eyelids flutter closed, soaking it in. “She also said that she had Zane and Hart outside the hospital all night, and even after Cole’s phone call, Ari never made a move.”
“If—and this is a big if—he’s working for Charlie, wouldn’t he have gone after Gavin when he knew he got caught?” Chelsea asks, looking around the room.
“That’s what we have to find out, Cupcake. After we get Gavin out, we’re going to have a meeting with Ari.”
“I have to ask, why the hell do you call her Cupcake?” I’ve been dying to know that since the beginning. Axel, Chelsea, and Cole dissolve into laughter. Chelsea laughs so hard that she snorts, and it sets them off all over again.
“When we were in middle school, some jackass called her a name while she was eating a cupcake. Before Cole or I could do anything, she smashed it in his face,” Axel says between laughs.
“He’s called me that ever since.”
“What about Ladybug?” Nolan adds.
“She used to wear this white dress that had ladybugs all over it.” Cole runs his knuckles down her cheek. “And she looked beautiful in it.”
She blushes, but I don’t see that automatic refusal you can sometimes see in her eyes. Chelsea takes compliments now like a fucking champ because she’s starting to believe us. She is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever laid eyes on, and it’s not just her looks. We sit around for almost an hour when Kai’s phone rings.
“Hello?” Kai answers, flipping it to speakerphone.
“Everything is a go with the doctor and nurses on staff tonight. The doctor was a little harder to convince, so I had to go back with a little extra incentive.” I hear Dex chuckle in the background and can only imagine what that incentive was. “They’re going to run it like a normal code blue, and then he’ll pronounce him dead within fifteen minutes. The nurses will bag him and take him to the morgue like planned. Banger will have the ambulance waiting. There is only one problem with this plan. How are you going to take him to a new hospital? Even with the new name, you have to explain why he has a healing gunshot wound.”
“How would you do it?” Axel asks.
“For the most part, Gavin is in the clear. If you have a place for him to go, Doc Sorenson and his wife, Loretta, said they’re more than happy to take over his care. Can Nolan get into his charts at the hospital?”
“Already in,” Nolan answers.
“Good.” I can hear the smile in Les’ voice, hearing how far Nolan has come. “He should have a plan of care in there so you’ll know what needs to be done, and Gavin will know too. The last I heard, the next step is physical therapy to gain his strength back. There’s one more thing. You guys don’t need to come here. Let us bring him to you.”
“What?” Axel demands.
“Think about it, if there is too much commotion around the hospital and Charlie does have someone watching, he’s going to figure out something is up. We’re already here all the time, so that won’t look suspicious. We’ll get him out, and you can be waiting when he gets there.”
“I don’t want anyone else involved in this shit. It’s our problem—”
“Shut up,” Les says in exasperation. “If you hardheaded fuckers would ask for help every once in a while, half of this shit wouldn’t have happened. You should have told us that day at Evie’s you felt something was off. Gray’s still pissed about that, by the way. But that’s beside the point. My point is that we are now involved, and if I have to issue a shoot-on-sight order if you step inside Abbs Valley, I will. We need you in Forest Grove waiting for Gavin.” Chelsea slaps a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing when Axel glares at the phone. “Are we clear?”
“Yes,” Axel answers through clenched teeth.
“Great. Now, how fast can you get him a place to stay?”
“Today. I just need to make a phone call,” Axel says, still not happy with being told what to do. Cole’s face is almost blood-red from holding his laughter in.
“What about Chels and the documents?”
“A couple of hours,” Chelsea says.
“That’s awesome. Just know when this is all done, the girls and I are kidnapping you for a girl’s day.”
