Tyler spins and starts walking backward. “Was I right about the size? Your asshole looks like it took some abuse.”

“Goddamnit, Tyler,” Ari growls. “Stop talking, and walk.”

“Fine,” Tyler says in a long, drawn out sigh.

Keon throws his arm around my shoulder and pulls me into his side. “How are you doing, Mama?”

“I’m okay. I’m worried about Ari.”

Keon looks over his shoulder at Ari and shrugs. “Whatever peace Tivon brought him is still there. Before, knowing that his father was that close would have sent him into a spiral.”

“What does this mean for all of us?”

“We go to them,” Keon replies with steel in his voice. “They’ve had the upper hand for too long. We finally caught a break with Cryptic.”

“We’re saving him, right?”

Keon smiles. “Weare, Mama. He’s risked his life multiple times for us already.”

“Good. Do you know how his brother is doing?”

“I talked to Axel before we left, and he said he’s having nightmares. Sean and Kai ended up camping with him in the living room so he wasn’t alone.”

I wrap my arms around Keon’s waist and hug him tight. “I love you.”

Keon’s feet falter for a second before he’s squeezing me so tight I can barely breathe. “I love you too, Mama. So fucking much.”

The SUV comes into view, and the lights flash when someone unlocks it. “We stay together,” Tivon announces. “We’ll get another one if we need it.”

Keon opens the door and I climb into the back with Jason following behind me. Keon gets comfortable between us and Gavin and Tyler take the middle seat, with Tivon driving, and Ari in the passenger seat after they load the bags.

After a very bumpy drive to get out of the hiding spot, Tivon pulls out onto the main road, and I tune out all their planning. It makes me nervous hearing them say they’re going to walk rightinto the lion’s den. I lay my head against Keon’s shoulder and must have dozed off, because the next thing I know, the car jerks. I lift my head. and Tivon is staring into the rearview mirror.

“Three cars,” he says to Ari, who is loading an AK and passing it back to Tyler.

One of the cars slams into the SUV, making us swerve again. Keon wraps his arms around me and Jason, pulling us in close to his body. “Hold on tight.”

“Take those motherfuckers out,” Ari barks, handing another AK to Gavin. He stabs the button for the sunroof, and they pop out.

“Cover your ears,” Keon instructs us, and we both bury our fingers in our ears.

I can still hear the gunfire and swallow against the panic when we swerve harder this time. Gavin and Tyler drop back in their seats to reload, and we swerve again.

This time the SUV starts to tip.

Tivon jerks the wheel hard when we start to tip, and we hit the pavement back on four wheels with a bounce. He speeds up when we hit a straight stretch, and I jerk my phone from my pocket, send a message, and then dial the one person I know that can help right now and flip it to speakerphone.

“Hello?” Les answers on the second ring.

“We have three cars on our ass. We’re coming through the last stretch into Abbs Valley. I sent Holden our location to track.”

“Got it.” Les starts barking orders in the background. “In about two miles there’s an access road to the left. Take it.”

Tivon’s eyes are going between the rearview mirror and the windshield, waiting for our turn. How the fuck did they find us? Jason left the watch at the other safehouse, which according to Cryptic, is how we were being tracked. I can’t help but think that Cryptic set us up, but I push that thought away. You can’t fake that kind of fear in his voice, and from what Axel has gotten from the brother, Cryptic was also there when Abraham’s men murdered their parents.
