“Well, you were in a state, anyway I’m here to once again offer my services if you aren’t opposed to how I appear.” How he appeared? Oh right, the ridiculous mask. I shake my head. “Perfect, well, I accept your offer.”

Did I offer him anything? Oh, I didn’t have the energy to argue with him, not today. Nothing made sense, and he was just confusing me even more. “You can accompany me to the firing range today, then.” I smile.

He stands towering above me. “What do you need to go there for?”

“I need to learn how to protect myself, or wasn’t that obvious?”

I feel his body push against mine and oh Holy fuck, did he feel good? I experience his warmth pressing against my back and his breath, revealing a secret to my skin as tingles of excitement travel down my spine. “What do you need to protect yourself for—” His head moves closer and I feel his warm breath hit my ear. “When you have me.” He whispers in my ear.

“Oh, am I interrupting?” Audrey stands gasping in the doorway.

“Oh, Jesus Christ.” I jumped up away from the bodyguard, who did not know about personal space. “Do you not know how to knock?” I accuse.

“Why” I accuse.

“Why would I need to knock when you leave the doors open?” She smirks. “I want to hear everything that happened between you and that gorgeous book geek.”

“He wasn’t a geek.” I groan.

“You had a date?” He interrupts. “Does that happen often?” My head whips around and I glare at him, hoping that he will realise his mistake, but he just straightens his back and folds his arms across his chest, allowing the ripples of muscles to pop beneath his black shirt.

“Well, come on girl, I want details,” Audrey squeals excitedly.

“I was speaking.” He interrupts once more.

“I ignored you because it’s none of your goddamn business.”

“None of my business?” He takes a step towards me and my body shudders in response.

“That’s right, it’s none of your business. Why do you want to know, anyway?”

He takes another step towards me. He’s close now. So close. His dark musky scent moves around my body like I’m basking in his dark and seductive, manly scent. “I like to know how many people I have to kill.” He growls.

Audrey races between us both, pushing him back. I’m not sure how because he was six feet of pure muscle. Her hand rests on his chest as she nuzzles him away from my body. “Chase, best not scare her off. I’m curious. How did you find yourself back here?” Her head whips back towards me. “I thought creepy mask guy was fired?” She cocks a brow.

“I’m so glad that is catching on.” He mutters.

“Well, you’re the one who refuses to show your face.” She rolls her eyes.

“I have my reasons. Now, how many dates are you going on?”

“None. I don’t make a habit of meeting many men.”

“That I doubt, sweetheart.” A chuckle falls from his lips.

“What’s that supposed to fucking mean? You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough.”

“You know what?” He looks back at me. “I don’t need this. You are strange, but that I can bypass. What I can’t bypass is how fucking rude you are.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Princess, but I’m not here to massage your ego. I’m here to safeguard you, and must be informed about the people you spend time with.”

“You’re fucking unbelievable.”

“Thanks,”

“That wasn’t a compliment.” I sigh. “You know what, just leave.”
