“Perfect.” Sebastian squeezes my shoulder in approval. “You’ve done excellent work today.”
The praise should warm me, but a chill runs along my spine instead. Today, excellence meansdismantling a life, however deserved that ruin might be.
Sebastian comes around to crouch beside my chair, bringing his scarred face level with mine, and his hazel eyes search my expression. “Are you still okay with this?”
The question catches me off guard. The Rockfords don’t seem like the type to check for consent once an operation is in motion. Sebastian’s pause to verify my continued participation stirs gratitude deep in my chest.
“I understand that it needs to be done,” I say, the words sticking in my throat. “It’s just the nerves. I’ve never taken such an active role before.”
Understanding softens Sebastian’s features, the scar tissue along his cheek crinkling as his expression shifts. “When I track someone, there’s always a moment where it stops feeling like justice and starts feeling like…”
“Power,” I finish for him. “Raw, unchecked power.”
“Yes.” His hand finds mine where it sits on the armrest. “That feeling never completely goes away. Nor should it. The discomfort keeps us human.”
My fingers interlace with his, drawing strength from his steady presence. “Does it get easier?”
“Not easier.” Sebastian’s thumb traces small circles across my knuckles. “More familiar. More controlled.”
The monitor pings with another alert as Travis attempts to access his email from the library in Brickwell. The trap almost springs before failing when he uses an old password instead of his current one.
My body tenses, the momentary connection breaking as I focus back on the hunt. Sebastian must notice the renewed trembling in my hands because he rises to his full height.
“Let me help with those nerves,” he offers, the drop in register to his baritone sending heat prickling across my skin despite the situation.
Sebastian crosses to the door with fluid grace, his fingers turning the lock with a decisive click.
He turns back around, his eyes finding mine across the room, and the air between us shifts with an electric charge. My pulse quickens as he stalks closer, his expression no longer that of a security expert but of an Alpha with a very different kind of prey in mind.
“What are you—” My question dies in my throat as Sebastian drops to his knees before my chair, the movement so unexpected it steals my breath.
His hands slide up my thighs, palms hot throughthe denim of my jeans. With gentle pressure, he pushes my legs apart to make space for his large body. My fingers curl around the leather armrests, the material turning slick beneath my touch.
“Sebastian,” I whisper, his name half question and half plea.
His head dips, and I gasp when his mouth finds the front of my jeans, breath hot and damp through the fabric. The sensation shoots straight through me like an electric bolt, and my hips jerk forward without my permission.
“We shouldn’t… The others could come back,” I protest, even as my body betrays me by lifting toward his mouth.
“They won’t.” Sebastian’s rumble vibrates my hardening dick as he works open my belt. “Not for at least an hour.”
The leather slips free with a soft hiss that sounds loud in the quiet room. Under his skilled fingers, the button of my jeans pops open, followed by the metallic whisper of my zipper. Cool air hits the thin cotton of my underwear as Sebastian tugs my jeans lower on my hips. His palms run up the insides of my thighs, leaving trails of heat that converge where the proof of my desire strains toward him.
“I’ve wanted to do this since I walked in and sawyou hunched over that keyboard.” His fingers hook into the waistband of my boxers. “The way your fingers moved across the keys, so sure, so in control, is the hottest thing I’ve ever seen.”
The confession catches me off guard, considering every indecent way he’s seen me before, and my choked laugh transforms into a moan when he tugs my underwear down, freeing me to the cool air of the war room. The contrast between the chill and his warm breath raises goose bumps on my skin.
“This is crazy,” I breathe, but my fingers find their way to his hair, threading through the short strands at the back of his head.
Sebastian grins up at me, the expression transforming his scarred face with playful boyishness despite our surroundings. “Crazy would be wasting this chance to be alone.”
I flick the alert volume to max and set an alert tied to the portal trigger. If the trap springs, it’ll cut through anything, even Sebastian’s mouth.
His tongue darts out to wet his lips, the simple motion that sparks another pulse of heat through my body. Then his mouth surrounds me in hot, wet perfection. My head falls back as he takes me deeper, the slide of his tongue along my shaft pulling a broken sound from my throat. The leather chaircreaks beneath me as my body tenses, fingers tightening in his hair.
Sebastian works me with confidence, one hand wrapping around the base while his mouth sinks lower. His free hand splays across my stomach beneath my sweatshirt, the heat of his palm burning through the cotton.
“Alpha,” I gasp when he hollows his cheeks, the suction pulling me deeper into his mouth. My fingers twist in his hair, but he doesn’t pull away.
