I passed my gaze between the pair. “Humaga?” I blurted, which was my attempt at asking if they knew one another.
They both turned to consider me. “He was speaking fine a minute ago. Maybe he’s been locked up too long.” David shivered. “What the hell is this place?”
After taking a glance at my cell, Sarah seemed to have dismissed me as unimportant and focused on David. “So, are you hurt?”
David rubbed the back of his head. “I got a nasty hit by some bum or something, and woke up in a fucking cell. I wouldn’t say my day’s going so great.”
Sarah backed away and hovered her fingers over the light switch. David’s eyes widened. “Hey, what’re you doing?” He rushed to the bars again. “Look, I know you and Sonya had just broken up and I’m sorry to make a move so fast. But you should have seen her. She was devastated. Sheneededme.”
Sarah scoffed. “You’re right. She did need you. But you have no idea what for.”
The lights clicked off.

Isnapped the locket closed and headed for the door.
“Where are you going?” Maxine asked.
I paused at the doorway, leaning on the frame to prevent myself from falling over.
“I’m sorry.” It was all I could say before breaking into a sprint and leaving Maxine behind.
I couldn’t get out of this place fast enough. The clicks of my heels beat against the walls as if the very sound waves wanted to escape. Each corridor led to the next and I started to worry I couldn’t remember the way out on my own.
I practically grew up in this damn place. Could I really not remember how to get out?
Finally, I made it to the dimly lit foyer and burst through the doors in a whirlwind of exasperation and relief.
Zack was waiting on the stoop staring at his phone and I tugged his shoulder after catching my breath. “C’mon. Let’s go.”
He huffed a short laugh and draped his arm around my shoulder as we walked away from the cathedral. “So, is the necklace empty?”
I nodded.
He sighed. “Look. I didn’t want to be right.”
“Yes, you did,” I snapped. He’d been trying to get back into my pants ever since prom.
He chuckled and motioned me to follow him down the street. “You’re going the wrong way.”
“Huh? But my place is that way.”
He shook his head. “We’re not going to your place,” he said before stuffing his hands in his pockets and following the sidewalk.
I’d never seen Zack like this before. His shoulders drooped and he kept his eyes cast down at his feet. Even his usual cocky “I know I’m hot” strut had transformed into a solemn shuffle down the sidewalk.
“So,” I ventured, “if we’re not going to my place, which has unlimited Oreos and beer, by the way, where are you taking me?”
He chuckled. “I don’t know if it beats that but,” he patted his back pocket, “I texted Derek while you were with Maxine. Luckily, he’s in town.”
I balked. “TheDerek? Since when do youtextwith the oldest incubus on the planet?”
“Since he found out that you had a Blood Stone.”
I clutched the necklace now hanging around my neck. It was cold and lifeless. “Well, he’s not getting his mitts on it.”
