“Relax. It’s not like that.”

“Then what’s it like?”

He swerved and glared down at me. “Trust me this once, will you?” He grasped my necklace, pulling my body close to his. “You know how I feel about you,” he whispered, placing a soft kiss on my forehead and my ears went hot. “But your mom told me about your destiny long before you ever accepted it. I’m not one of your four, hell, I’m not even one of your sins.” His thumb ran over the cool metal of my necklace. “I’m not capable of changing this for you, but I have a feeling I know who can.”

He pressed his lips lightly against mine, briefly letting me taste the salty residue of his lust, and then spun around, stomping off down the street, leaving me gasping for breath.

I huffed and clamped my mouth shut, trailing after him and pushed down the butterflies fluttering in my stomach.

After a few moments of hearing nothing other than Zack’s shuffling feet and my own clicking heels, we finally came to a halt.

“There we are,” Zack said.

There was nothing other than a limo with its headlights still on.

Wait.

“Are you shitting me?”

Zack smiled and crossed the street. I tried not to let my jaw hang open as I followed him and stared at the glistening paint job before he opened the door.

We were really going to see the freaking Incubus King.

Zack loved luxury, especially the overindulgent, expensive kind. His radiating smile filled me with warmth and when he opened the door and I slipped inside, I saw how indulgent the limo really was.

Sheer silk curtains draped across the tinted windows, bubbling champagne and bottles of whiskey were hooked into the upper cabinet, and a massive TV hung where a sunroof should have been.

I swallowed and settled across from two well-dressed security guards that blended in with the luxurious interior.

I’d always gone through life just as any human would, never using my ability to wrap any man around my little finger to an unfair advantage. I’d had a weak moment once or twice, but how could I be selfish? Any moment of weakness meant death.David…

I scooted down the long seat and Zack slipped in behind me.

“So,” I asked the statuesque guards, “what’re you, FBI agents or something?”

The one closest to me pulled off his glasses and leaned an elbow on his knee. His piercing blue eyes bore into mine and I wondered if he was really human. My insides lurched as our gazes met and a rune among the four blazed with heat, making me buckle over and grab it. It wasn’t pain, but an intense pleasure that took me off guard.

“Better than the FBI,” he said, his voice husky as if he sensed the impact his mere presence had on me. “We’re the King’s Guard,” he replied with a sidelong smirk.

I rolled my eyes as the sensation faded. My runes were just confused. This guy was not one of the seven I was looking for.

One of the King’s guard, hmm. Even if that was true, he didn’t have to make it sound so ridiculous.

The human leaned back in the leather seat, spreading his legs like men tend to do when they think they have ten pound balls that can’t be bothered to be grazed by their supposedly massive thighs.

Zack cleared his throat and shoved the guy down a few inches so that he could sit across from me. “Who’s the incubus here? You or me?”

The guard frowned and crossed his arms. “My father’s an incubus,” he muttered.

Zack chuckled. “It only carries down from the female gene. Tough luck, bro.”

I smiled at the guard in spite of the revelation. At least I knew where his good looks came from, and perhaps why he’d confused my prophecy. Depending on the lineage of his father, he might have some relation to the pull of the dark magic I’d been running from.

The guard winked at me and tapped the window. The limo eased into motion and pop music began to play. The TV overhead blipped on and displayed a bunch of attractive dancing girls rubbing up on each other in a club.

Zack breathed out a sigh and leaned over to run his fingers across the array of bottles. “What’s your poison?”

I smiled. “Whiskey, please.”
