One silentplup! and David was out on the floor with a dart sticking out of his chest.

Anderson cast me a glance as he unlocked David’s cell. “You’re quiet. No jokes today?” He grinned. “Cat got your tongue?” He loved that joke. Cats have nine lives. Haha. Hilarious. It’d lost any humor it might have had once I’d gotten through enough mortal wounds to vastly surpass nine lifetimes.

I frowned and cast a glance to the security room where Sarah’s blue eyes peered through the darkness. I flicked my gaze back to Anderson.

Anderson hesitated, and then looked to the security room.

I wasn’t sure if Sarah was friend or foe. History didn’t favor the muse as a species. They were just too strong, capable of burrowing into people’s brains and seeing whatever they wanted to see, and making people do whatever they wanted them to do.

Though, seeing her triggered my mother’s vision. At the time, I’d thought my mother had drugged me and I was having one hell of a trip. The vision had said I would have to wait in this cell until a woman came, and only I could help her embrace the fate of four. If I didn’t intervene, then supernaturals would overrun the world. And not the good kind, if there was such a thing.

But Sarah, she couldn’t be the girl I was waiting for. I was waiting for someone pure of heart. If Sarah was friends with the succubus, that made it pretty clear she was no friend of mine.

Sarah’s eyes widened as Anderson approached the darkened doorway. She reeled back into the shadows, but it was too late.

Anderson snatched the door open. “Who’s there?” he roared.

Going on the offensive, Sarah pounced like a lion. Her aura brightened the room as she reached into a supernatural territory of power I barely understood. Its effects made me waver and my eyelids felt like hundred-pound weights suddenly hung off them. I staggered and marveled how Anderson straightened, completely unaffected by her aura. Sarah snarled and the air shifted like oil, sweeping out in a shockwave.

“Sleep!” Sarah shouted.

Anderson laughed. Damn it, he just stood there and laughed at a muse. “How kind of you to deliver yourself to my lab. You were never my main target, but since you’re already here, you’ll get to help me nab that succubus bitch too.”

Sarah launched herself at him like a wild animal. Anderson sidestepped her attack and she landed face-first into the cement. Her lip busted and a splotch of bright red blood smeared across her cheek.

Anderson took out a pouch of tranquilizers and picked the smallest one. He kneeled over her and pricked her in the neck.

Sarah yelped and reached for the dart, but it was too late. She slumped over, completely paralyzed. But her eyes darted, still awake.

Anderson grinned and pointed his dart gun my way. The last thing I saw was Anderson dragging Sarah into my cell.

24 Hours Until I Lust Again

Being reminded that Sarah wasn’t human wasn’t what I wanted to hear right now. Nothing about my life was normal. Zack was only trying to assure me she could take care of herself, but when it came to my life, nothing ever went as planned.

I sighed and thrust out my empty glass. “Fill ‘er up.”

Zack smiled and popped the whiskey bottle open and poured me another drink. The wafting scent of ancient oak and orange peel tickled my nose and I brought the heat to my lips, letting it slither down and calm the butterflies in my belly.

I clicked my tongue and eyed the security guard who was pretending not to watch me. That pull between us was still there and I did the best I could to brush it off. Whoever held this connection to my runes, it certainly wasn’t a human. “We almost there?” I asked the mortal, hoping to jar him out of his blatant staring.

He started and cleared his throat, then elbowed his companion who shifted to the window, pulling the drape aside. “Yes,” his smooth voice replied. “We’re pulling into the driveway now.”

I shifted to my own window and peered outside. The limo bumped over a rail for a security gate and eased through popping gravel. Even through the heavy tinting of the glass, the array of floodlights lit up the mansion like a beacon. A Queen Anne style home blocked out the moon, and I bit my cheek in revulsion that I knew what the style was called—Sarah always said I spent far too much time watching “Million Dollar Homes.”

When the limo slid to a halt, I realized I felt weak and dizzy. It wasn’t the alcohol, although that didn’t help. This would be the first time I was meeting a man who I not only couldn’t control, but could possibly controlme. Even Zack I could overcome to some degree. But this wasn’t just a powerful incubus. This wastheincubus. Not having my powers of seduction to fall back on made me feel more naked than if I’d dropped all my clothes and walked down a crowded beach.

Zack nudged me in the ribs and I yelped. “C’mon, succubus. It’s time to get that necklace charged and get your girl back.”

Once I took three steps down the grainy path, I paused to marvel at the modern castle towering over me. The mansion was just like any I’d seen on “Million Dollar Homes,” and it was even more breathtaking in person. The symmetrical walls made it look like a fort, but the twirling iron bars kept it elegant. And no castle would be complete without a moat. The only way to get to the house was a narrow path flanked by a still mosaic pond on each side. As I picked my way across the stones I felt as if I’d been teleported to some outlandish Japanese garden.

A shiver of delight sped up my spine as Zack slipped an arm around my waist and guided me down the trail past the water’s edge. I welcomed his warmth and was too drunk to resist pulling in the lust lingering on his skin. He only pulled me closer to his side in response, not seeming to mind that I was stealing his energy.

Zack’s sexual power sobered me up just enough to keep me from staggering to the massive oak door.

“Do you think he likes blondes?” I ventured, hoping my question didn’t sound as pathetic to him as it did in my own head.
