Zack pulled me away from Derek and closer into his chest. “That’s my sister. She cares about the humans, you know.” He kissed the back of my head. “She waits until she finds someone willing to die for her rather than simply take what she needs.”
Derek chuckled, but it wasn’t in a mocking way. “I admire that.”
I wriggled out of Zack’s grasp, even though it felt familiar and safe. I needed to focus on my mission. Charge the necklace. Save David. Win Sarah back.
My manicured hand shot to the lifeless silver around my neck. “I’m here to charge this. Zack said you knew an incubus who could help.”
Zack offered a muffled chuckle and I glowered at him. What was so damn funny?
Derek’s eyelashes lowered and considered the locket. He drifted his fingers over it, and a soft warmth encased the metal at his touch. “I believe I can help you with that.” Just when I caught the gleam in his eye and realized he meanthewas the one who was going to charge my necklace, his smile turned wicked. “You’ll need to do something formefirst.”
I narrowed my gaze and glared at Derek. I needed the necklace charged. I needed to save David if I was ever to live with myself, or see Sarah again. “What do I have to do?”
He bent down to press his lips against my ear. “Fuck my wife.”
Anderson's Truth
Luke
When I woke, Sarah was seething in the corner. Anderson had left the lights on and looked far too smug slicing his apple while lounging on a puke-green chair.
Anderson narrowed his eyes at his newest prisoner. “I’m not quite sure what species you are yet.”
“Doesn’t much matter.” Sarah glared. “You resisted my powers, not that it should be possible.”
He shrugged. “I have a knack for supernaturals. It’s the same way I can resist your succubus friend, I suppose.” He leaned on his knees. “Look. I don’t think I’m human either, but unlike you two,” he pointed the knife, “I don’t have any nifty powers to separate me from the rest. I just… resist.” His palm layed out flat, as if that wasn’t any sort of personal achievement.
Sarah rolled her eyes. “That’s a damn good power, if you ask me. So, what do you want with us?”
He glanced at me. “I need all the power I can get to rescue my daughter.”
His daughter? The psycho had offspring? What an unfortunate blight on the world. I hoped I’d never meet the she-beast.
“You could try asking for help,” Sarah suggested.
He frowned, and then stood. He unbuttoned his suit and pulled his shirt until we were plagued with the pasty white of his ribcage. A nasty red scar lit across his side. “This is what I got when I tried asking.” He tucked his shirt back in.
I couldn’t take it anymore and beat my fists against the bars. One puny little scar and he’d justified kidnapping and torture? Just because I didn’t keep a scar didn’t mean I didn’t have a vendetta too. He’d sliced me up like an onion on a daily basis and I was going to kill him one day. Nice and slow.
“Calm down, freak,” Anderson barked. “I know you don’t have any sympathy for me. But I don’t need it. Once I get the succubus, you’re free to go.”
That was news to me. If he thought I’d just shake his hand and be on my way, he had another thing coming.
Sarah frowned. “What’s Sonya got to do with this?”
He smiled. “You know, freak here never asked. But I think you’d appreciate what I’m trying to do.” He settled himself into his chair like a fluffed out hen. “A succubus can extract power, right? And I resist it.” He leaned, his eyes growing wide and intense. “She kissed me, once. When she thought her powers worked on me. Do you know what happened next? I realized I wasn’t human, because I woke up ten years younger and my wife was dead.” A moment of rage passed his face. “Unfortunately, by the time I figured it all out, the succubus was long gone and so was my daughter.” His eyes narrowed. “I’ve been tracking her ever since. The Black Widow. That’s what I called her when I saw what she did to men.” Anderson went quiet and his gaze drifted to David.
Sarah turned somber as we considered his slow-rising chest.
“She can’t just get away with this. I’m going to take her abilities again, and I’m not going to take life with it. I’m going to take power.” His eyes met mine. “I’m going to take every supernatural’s power I can and save my daughter.”
Sarah scoffed. “Take a supernatural’s power? Sonya can’t do that.”
He popped a slice of apple into his mouth. “I can do it. I just need a boost.” He eyed me like a hungry beast. “Infinite regeneration would be a pretty convenient power to have. It’d get me a long way towards rescuing my daughter if I could recover from dagger wounds.” He shrugged. “I’m not the best in a knife fight.”
Sarah glanced at me. “Regeneration, huh?” She searched my eyes, and then her own went wide as if a memory had been triggered. Shit. She knows what I am?
She coughed politely, turning her head away. “Never heard of a supernatural who could regenerate.”
