Zack sighed. “Man. I can’t compete when you’re in the room.”
Derek laughed. “They’ll be fine once I leave.” He peeled the girls off his chest. “Okay, ladies. Wait here and I promise you’ll find Zack more appealing once I’m gone.” Derek winked at me and took my hand. “I have something else on the menu tonight.”
I swallowed. I’d never had a threesome before. Not that I was opposed to the idea, but it was bad enough I’d kill one person, let alone two. Needless to say, I’d never found an Incubus King and his wife for such an opportunity to present itself.
I let Derek lead me away while the other girls gave me angry stares. Their interest waned once we’d made our way down the hall and they investigated Zack with increasing cascades of giggles. He offered me an encouraging wave as Derek swept me around the corner.
“I imagine you’ve never done something like this before,” Derek said. I nodded and he squeezed my hand. “I’m not going to make you do anything you don’t want to do. That’s why I gave you a dose of Silvia’s blood.” He bobbed his head to the side, as if to admit that was only a half-truth. “Well, that and I need you capable of looking at Silvia instead of me.”
I blinked. “Silvia’s… blood?” A wave of queasiness swept through my stomach. I’d told Maxine I wasn’t a vampire. I wasn’t… right?
“It’s not easy to make a dose. But I won’t get into the technicalities of how it all works.” He pointed to a door at the end of the long corridor encrusted with silver. “Those are my bedchambers.”
I blinked and reluctantly tugged away from him. “Look, I’m sorry but I’m confused.” I wrapped my fingers around the cold necklace. “I need to charge this. Someone’s life is on the line and it’s my fault. I can do whatever you want later… but first, please, help me charge this and undo my mistake.”
He chuckled, running a finger under my chin. “My dear, you and your necklace can have all the sexual energy my wife has to offer. I don’t need it.” His finger ran down my throat and traced a circle around the locket across my cleavage. “My wife isn’t human. I don’t know what she is, actually, but she can charge this without even breaking a sweat.” He bent, placing his lips on the locket and warmth pressed through to my chest.
Even with the resistant, my knees turned to Jell-O and I couldn’t help but bite my lip in anticipation, my eyes glued to his hairless pecs.
I forced myself to match his gaze, and he smirked. How could a smirk be so damn hot? His skin reminded me of silk on marble and I couldn’t help but graze my finger across his collarbone. I’d never wanted something so bad and wanted to run away at the same time. Derek was a “double D” cocktail: delicious… and dangerous.
What the hell am I getting myself into?
“I’m not sure what to expect,” I said.
“Come with me and you can see for yourself.”
I suddenly felt anxious and unsure. Is this something I really wanted to do?
“Why don't you tell me a little bit more about your wife first?” I leaned against the wall and crossed my arms. “She's got to be something special if you’ve got a giant ass painting of her naked for everyone to see in your living room.”
Derek chuckled. “She's not shy.” He straightened, tucking the tips of his fingers into his waistband. “She's the mother of my children. She's an endless supply of love, life, and sexual energy.”
I cocked my head to the side. A sense of hope swept over me. “Endless? She doesn't experience deterioration?”
“No. I’ve never seen anything like her in all my years.” His gaze grew distant and my hope dwindled. It was too good to be true. I’d have to continue to kill to survive, unless I found someone like her. He said she could charge the Blood Stone. Did that mean I could feed off her? I couldn’t simply start up a tryst with the Incubus King’s wife… or could I?
As if he sensed my malicious thoughts, he leaned in with a growl in his throat. “Let’s get something straight. You’re just here to do what I need you to do. When the night’s done, she's mine.”
My knees went weak and I swallowed a dry lump in my throat, wishing I had more whiskey to endure the fire burning in Derek’s eyes. “You’re pretty good at reading body language,” I said with a weak laugh, hoping flattery would buy me some kudos. His stare continued to bore through me. “If you're so protective, why do you want me to sleep with her? I don't get it.”
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. I relaxed, feeling as if he'd lowered his hackles. “She's kind of...more into chicks.” His face went red-hot.
I blinked. “What?”
He looked down the hall at the silver encrusted door, his face drooping. “I know she loves me. And she wants children just as much as I do, which is probably why she stays with me at all.” His gaze drifted to the necklace resting atop my breasts. “But the way it works is she can't become pregnant if she's not aroused. I'm not sure why, or how, but that's just the way her body is built.”
I choked on a laugh and rushed a hand to my face. “Sorry,” I blurted the apology and turned sober. “You have no effect on her?”
He eyed me as if he was tired. “Her blood makes the resistant, remember? And if she’s a lesbian at heart, it’s not easy for me to get her blood pumping.”
I hummed. I may only be twenty-two years old, but I’d never once heard of a creature, human or otherwise, who could resist the Incubus King.
“So, why do you need me?” I peered down the way we had come. "What of those thralls?"
His eyes went dark. “Do you really think I want to conceive my child by taking someone else’s life? No, I need a succubus. And there aren’t many of your kind left, nor many willing to take the risk.”
I jerked upright. “What risk?”
