He waved the air as if my question had no merit. “Your necklace will protect you from that.”

I pulled the collar of his shirt, hearing a slight rip of the silk as I pulled him to look me in the eye. “What…risk?”

He smiled, his hot breath puffing on my face in a short laugh. “Have you ever heard of a succubus overfeeding?”

I released his collar. “No.”

He placed one hand against the wall next to my head and leaned in, and I suddenly became aware of his hard chest so close to mine. “I learned it the hard way. Our first try with a succubus left her mad with the surplus sexual energy. I’d been so afraid of depriving her that I’d given her too much, and she drowned in it. A bit ironic, wouldn’t you say?”

I swallowed and averted my eyes, then flicked them back when I’d registered what he’d just said. “What do you meanyougave her too much? It’s your wife’s sexual energy, how is it yours to give?” I shifted my weight and tried to ignore Derek’s hot breath tickling my neck. “It’s one thing to push sexual energy onto humans, but it’s quite another to transfer it to another succubus. I should know, trying to feed off Zack is like getting three drops of water from a stone. Is that some Incubus King perk or something?”

Derek pushed in closer with an impatient growl, groping across my flat stomach. I froze when his fingers grazed mercilessly over my runes. They awoke under his touch, blazing with heat and he flinched. His hand groped until he reached the rune that seemed to blend with his warmth on the far left of my ribcage.

He tried to lift my shirt to get a better look, but I gripped his wrist and widened my eyes. He was one of the seven, somehow, just like Sarah had been. I felt a kindred strength and his link to my destiny—but not one of thefour—whatever the fuck that meant. There was something sinister there, too, but I needed to explore why my prophecy included him. I needed to know why my body sang under him. “Do you feel that?” I asked, both hesitant and hopeful.

His fingers continued to stroke and he leaned in until his breath caressed my skin. “What is it?” he asked, sounding curious now.

“You and I…” I breathed, “we share a destiny.”

He laughed—actually fucking laughed at me—then his teeth bit into my neck and I held in the moan of pleasure. “I don’t believe in destiny,” he growled.

I straightened, pushing him back and stepping purposefully for the bedchambers. "All right. Let's get on with it then, shall we? I have a human to save and you have a wife to get pregnant." He might believe in destiny, but my stupid ass runes didn’t just light up for anyone.

He gave me a wicked smile, seeming pleased with my eagerness. "Am I wrong, or are you more into women yourself?"

I offered him a dry chuckle, wrapping my fingers around the silver handle. “I suppose we’ll find out.”

Silvia

Sonya

If I’d thought the painting in Derek’s foyer was breathtaking, then seeing Silvia in the flesh was like a 3D hologram on the sexual equivalent of steroids. She rose from the bed, her flawless skin covered only by a skimpy nightgown and a layer of lace ribbing across her chest underneath. Only a perfect figure could pull off such a tight stretch of fabric. Derek had said she wasn’t shy, but damn, I wasn’t sure even I could wear a getup like that.

As she glided across the room, her shadow crawling across the beige marble and curling about my feet, I wondered if she was ever allowed outside. The moon formed a halo around her head, making her look like Lilith, an immortal succubus I’d heard about in fairy tales. And if I'd seen Silvia on the street, I'd think her Lilith incarnate.

“You must be Silvia." I extended my hand in greeting. "I'm Sonya. Pleased to meet you."

Her plump lips curved into a wry smile. “Aren't you formal?" Her words held a mysterious accent that melted my heart.

She bypassed my hand and swept into my chest, wrapping her arms around my torso and pressing her lips against my cheek. I chuckled, folding my arms around her body and letting my fingers tease the curled strands of the midnight-colored locks bouncing all the way down to her waist. Her scent enveloped me, springing up images of fresh peeled oranges and orchids.

But I couldn’t ignore a cold sensation that filled my heart. Like any other woman on this planet, I couldn’t feel any of her sexual energy.

I pulled away, feeling naked even though I was fully clothed. She smiled, her cheeks flushed and her long eyelashes drooping over her emerald eyes in a flirtatious flutter.

“How do you like her, my dear?” Derek asked his wife, his words dripping with lust and hope.

Silvia giggled, and the sound chimed against my ears as the most pleasant sound to have ever existed. “She’s perfect.”

My thumb ran around the ring on my pinky out of habit. While her words were kind, I couldn’t sense any energy on her skin. Even with Sarah I feltsomething. “She doesn’t seem to like me.”

Derek chuckled knowingly, draping his arms over the both of us and pulling me into his chest…and closer to Silvia’s lips.

“I assure you,” Derek said, “you’re quite mistaken.”

I’d never seen sexual energy as a visible aura before, but in my gut I felt Derek do something and the air around us snapped. His right hand glowed blue as it squeezed Silvia’s shoulder, the light crawling through his veins until it made its way to the other side…and into me.

I gasped with the sensation of Silvia’s desire. Silvia moaned and the sexual energy burned through my skin where Derek held on tight. I leaned in, placing my lips against hers, and reveled in the burn of her lust and the silk of her skin. Now, I understood. I could never feed off of a woman. It was a limitation spun by the cruel gods who had created my race. But with Derek as a conduit, I could bend the rules.
