Two knuckle marks seared red across his skin before vanishing. Zack watched me, his own fists clenched and his lips curled over his teeth in a snarl. He was always laughing. I wasn’t used to seeing him this way. I tensed, waiting for him to retaliate, but he relaxed his shoulders and waited for my heaving breaths to slow before he spoke. “Sonya,” he whispered my name. “How much time did you have left when you slept with David?”

“What?”

He glanced at my watch. “You always time your starvation down to the millisecond. How close was it?”

I swallowed. What did that matter?

His eyes went wide. “How close?”

“Seconds,” I spat.

He clicked his tongue and looked away. “The fuck, Sonya.”

“That shouldn’t have mattered. I was with him for not even half an hour. There’s no way that was enough to kill him, no matter how hungry I was. He should’ve had months left.” I crawled my fingers through my tangled hair and growled with frustration. “How is he dead?”

Zack’s hand rested on my arm and I flung him off. I couldn’t stand for anyone to touch me right now. I shouldn’t have left David alone with that madman. While I was having orgasmic, supernatural sex… David…

“Detective Anderson must have done something,” Zack blurted.

I matched his gaze and held onto it, searching for some grain of hope that this wasn’t all my fault.

His hand hovered over my arm, but then his fingers retracted, curling into a ball. “If he’s got Sarah then we were wrong about everything. Your powers aren’t to blame.”

I swallowed. Sarah was still in danger. But she was a muse. She should be able to protect herself. My mind reeled back to the image of her with a black eye and that blood spot pooled just above her stomach. It didn’t seem real.

“Look,” Zack said, splitting into my thoughts again. “This is bigger than Sarah. If that detective has got something that can mess with our powers, we need to find out what it is. This puts our entire race in danger. You understand what that means?”

I’d never heard of anyone finding a way to mess with our powers. But the few times I’d come face-to-face with that damned detective, he’d been unaffected by my touch. I’d just assumed something was wrong with me…

My gaze fell to the floor. The phone was still laying there like road kill. Its black screen reflected the image of the paintings lining the wall. Silvia’s was right in front of us, and I hadn’t even noticed the shockwave had dotted it with bits of smoldering embers.Derek is going to kill me…

Zack’s hands wrapped around my shoulders and I squeezed my eyes shut.

“Get ahold of yourself. You have aBlood Stone. We can save Sarah, and stop that stupid human.”

I wriggled out of his grasp with a snarl of anguish. “We? There is no ‘we’ here. You don’t give two shits about humans, probably muses either. I’m going to save Sarah, and I’m going alone.” I whirled and stomped for the massive double-doors. Placing both hands on the oak, my rage exuded through my skin and seared burn marks on the wood.

“Sonya.” Zack’s voice was hardly above a whisper.

“What?” I snapped.

Zack’s heat lingered at my back, but he didn’t attempt to touch me. “Be careful.”

There was no way I was going to respond to that. If I wasn’t a succubus, he wouldn’t have cared what happened to me. His love was hollow, andwrong. I deserved better than that.

Rage swelled in my chest, turning my locket molten hot and jolting energy through my fingertips like lightning. Spider cracks flew through the doors, the wood turning black before splintering under my weight. Sunlight poured in, far too cheerful for my mood. I snarled at it before walking outside, and head towards 4112 Lance Street.

My own screams reverberated in my head. Sarah sobbed somewhere in the background, yet at the same time it was as if she was here, right in front of me.

Anderson poised the scalpel before slicing and plunged his fingers into my chest. The agony reverberated through my body and burned like fire. Then I felt what I had hoped was just my imagination. Anderson had Sarah’s powers. They’d altered, and weren’t as strong, but I could feel the magic within him. The magic whispered to me, urging me to hand over my powers to Anderson. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t obey. My powers weren’t something to trade. They were simply a part of me.

Anderson snarled. “Dammit!”

I gasped when he jerked his hand out and blood trailed down my ribs.
