“Where is Luke?” I asked. “Or Nate?” I’d bonded with both of them and I was incomplete as long as they were out of my reach. My insides hurt more than I cared to admit being separated from them.
The Incubus King stood before me in all his glory, ignoring my pain. He’d showered in the plane’s suite, his damp hair slicked back, and now garbed a silken black shirt open down to his navel. His jeans hugged his hips and I teased my lip between my teeth, trying not to let my eyes dip any lower. Another trickle of power evaporated into my body, feeding the energy it took to form those words, and keep my sanity as I waited for him to answer my question.
Derek frowned, but chose to answer me honestly, likely concerned I’d only use more of the Blood Stone to thwart him. “Your angel lover preceded us here. He’s being held someplace close, just in case you are foolish enough to drain your Blood Stone again.” He sighed. “And my son, he’s been such a disappointment. I was so proud that he’d seduced you and survived it, but now he’s grown far too attached. I forced him to procure half of the women I fed on tonight, and now he’s serving penance by filling my other thrall houses.” His jaw went hard. “You won’t see him again.”
My eyes went wide with the truths that hit me like a blow. Luke was so strong, yet tormented, and had spent most of his life trapped in a cage. I couldn’t imagine what he was going through now. He was once again a prisoner, and even if I wasn’t sure if we were even on the same team, I’d witnessed his memories. I’d seen what his life had been like and wished better for him. He didn’t deserve to be a prisoner.
And Nate, the human who I’d grown too fond of and was undoubtedly a piece of my soul, also suffered because of me. I knew how he disapproved of how the incubi lived in order to survive, even though he was born because of one. He’d approved my Blood Stone and my goal to find a way to live my life without taking anyone else’s. There was an understanding and connection between us that ignited a deep need within me. We’d had sex, which had been brave and stupid of him, and both of us had found comfort in each other’s arms. It pained me to know that the Incubus King had forced Nate to help him take lives. I promised myself that once I got out of this, I’d find Nate and make sure the Incubus King had no power over him anymore.
“Jet will be escorting you to the tower,” Derek announced, and his voice sucked me out of my thoughts and into a foggy world where he was the only thing that mattered.
“Will you be coming with us?” I asked, not able to look at the tattooed man who took my wrist.
Derek gave me a devilish smile. “No, dear. I’ve matters to attend to. But rest assured, you will be seeing me again very soon.”
Icursed myself when I was out of Derek’s influence and in a small black cab that barreled down a brilliant freeway nesting between buildings that pierced the sky.
“That piece of shit is too powerful,” I growled.
Jet, my tattooed-dragon captor, chuckled with amusement. “I’ve never seen anyone resist him, but you tried, I’ll give you that.”
His gaze dipped to the Blood Stone at my chest. Its red brilliance had dulled when I stopped draining it and now it looked like a simple locket. I wrapped my fingers protectively around the warm metal. It was my lifeline. I could feed without killing. I could resist the Incubus King, even if it was only enough to annoy him and ask a few questions.
“Why are you helping him?” I asked.
He glanced at the driver before settling his gaze back onto me. “How about a drink?” he asked, ignoring my question. “You look thirsty.”
It’d been a long flight, and I’d been bound to a chair the whole way. My back ached and there was a maddening itch on my left foot.
But now, I wasn’t bound at all. I wasn’t stupid enough to try and escape, not with a dragon beside me. He’d snatch me up before I blinked twice. Dragons were known for their speed, as well as their lack of mercy.
But as I agreed and watched him pop open a compartment for Derek’s famed whiskey, I didn’t find that he matched that description. Fine layers of muscles rippled on his otherwise lean frame, a trait that made Asians very attractive. The tattoos, they were magical, and I found myself wanting to run my fingers over them and uncover their meaning.
“Here you are,” he said, offering me a glass that reflected the city’s lights off of its golden liquid contents.
I downed it without hesitation. I’d had one hell of a couple of days, and if I were a betting woman, I’d say it was only going to get worse.
“Whoa there,” he said with a laugh, “take it easy.”
I thrust my glass back at him and glared until he gave me a refill. “Why?” I asked curtly. “Do I need to be lucid for whatever Derek has planned for me? He wants me to get his wife pregnant again. I’m in no mood. At least I can be drunk.”
His laughter faded and he glanced at the driver again. I thought he’d say something, but he sat in silence while I sipped my drink.
A Siren's Kiss
Sarah
The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end when I realized that we were being watched. The sirens filtering through the crowds had gone silent, even their melodies drifting away into memories, and now they were eyeing us with interest.
“Don’t mind them,” the young siren said. She gave me a smile and leaned in closer. “They’re just interested to see how I handle my first time.”
I knew that she was young, but to be her first victim meant she’d been recently Made, perhaps in the past few days. “Well, Apollo won’t be pleased if you try to feed off me.”
She shrugged. “They don’t have to know that. Let’s make it look good, okay? Then I’ll listen to the terms of your trade.”
I pinched my lips together before I agreed. She was going to feed off me, and even if an older siren could potentially feed without long-term effects, a newborn could easily kill. But she eyed me with such confidence. She knew that I needed something from her, and I needed it bad enough to risk my life.
“If I kiss you, then you are going to agree to the terms of my trade no matter what. Got it? Or I’ll make sure Apollo wipes out every waterlogged brain cell in your pretty head until you’re a sea slug.”
