“Luke,” I managed to say, my jaw trying to chatter, but failing with my fangs in the way, “are you okay?”

He nodded, but his lips were blue. “I’ll be fine. Just let Xavier warm you up. I need to heal on my own.”

I nodded, then turned my attention back to the door that reverberated with power. The witches threw their heads back, shouting their incantation now, and one final shockwave burst through and the entire tunnel went dark.

The door unlatched, and I felt it more than I heard it as the displacement of air pressure hit my chest. A musty scent burst out into the tunnel as if the room beyond had been sealed off for a hundred years. Two red eyes glowed in the distance and blinked at us, and I knew we’d been too late.

My daughter had given in to her demon side. She’d gone insane.

Demonspawn Daughter

Sonya

Subduing the demonspawn proved difficult, mostly because my go-to response for dealing with enemies would be one: seduce them to death, or two: seduce someone else to kill my enemy for me.

When it came to my misguided daughter, I didn’t know what to do. She launched at us, her demonic side having taken over and her red eyes wild as her teeth extended like a row of shark teeth. I turned on a flashlight just in time to see her deadly bite coming straight for me.

Luke launched in front of me and held out his arm. Lilith chomped down and blood sprayed everywhere.

“Silvia!” he shouted. “Do something!”

The angel just stared at the crazed demonspawn, stunned. Finally, she flared her wings and silver power I’d never seen before swept through her. Had we not been in a dark tunnel, maybe I wouldn’t have noticed it. She pushed power into her voice as she commanded the demonspawn. “Stop!”

As if she’d been punched, the demonspawn unlatched her vicious bite and doubled over. She gripped her stomach and the most pitiful sound came from her throat as she crumpled to the floor. Blisters spread over her skin and she whimpered, suddenly much more helpless than she’d been before.

The nasty bite on Luke’s arm stopped bleeding, but it would take a few days for it to heal. He winced as he ripped off his shirt and wrapped it around the wound. “It’ll heal better if it’s not trying to protect itself from the bacteria in the air,” he explained as I watched him.

Xavier was the first to take action. He scooped up the demonspawn, whose welts were only getting worse, and gave Silvia a stern glare. “So, we’ve freed the monster,” he declared, obviously none too happy about it. “What do you want to do with her now where she won’t be of harm to herself, or others?”

Silvia sighed. “We’ll create another prison for her, but this time, she’s not going to be alone.” She waved at the witches who pressed themselves against the stone walls. I imagined they’d expended all of their power breaking the seal on the door and weren’t equipped to take on a demonspawn.

“Come, girls. You have one more spell to cast.”

Silvia spun on her hill and marched through the tunnels, but her wings flared and her once light steps pounded against the stone. I didn’t think this was what she’d been hoping for when we freed her daughter.

Our daughter.

I glanced at the girl now unconscious in Xavier’s arms. The lesions were already healing, but she’d taken on more of a human appearance after whatever Silvia had done to her. Long, midnight waves of hair swept over Xavier’s arms and her pink, plump lips most certainly marked her as a daughter of mine. The fangs were gone and her cheeks struggled to take on a rosy hue. Her slight frame was attractive for her proportions and if she hadn’t been in a fit of bloodlust just a moment before, I would have thought her a beautiful, innocent girl.

“The poor thing,” Xavier whispered as he shifted her slight weight in his arms. “I hope there’s something Silvia can do for her.”

My heart pinched to hear that Xavier cared. If a ruthless, ancient vampire could care about a demonspawn girl, perhaps there was room in my heart to care for her too.

Once we exited the tunnels, a group of anxious servants awaited us. Silvia snapped orders at them to get her chamber ready and they sprang into action. By the time we climbed the stairs and reached Silvia’s bedroom, the servants had already brought a multitude of jars filled with glowing, silver water. I’d never seen anything like it.

“What is that?” I whispered to Luke.

His eyes went wide as he watched the first of the servants dump the water over the walls. “I believe that’s holy water infused with Angelstone.”

I gulped. Where was Silvia getting all this stuff?

“Xavier, if you would be so kind, please give the child to me,” Silvia said and held out her arms.

“Wait,” I protested, then leaned in closer to the girl. She still slept and looked so innocent. My heart twisted again and something inside of me compelled me to press a kiss to her forehead. She moaned and stirred, but didn’t open her eyes.

“Quickly now,” Silvia insisted.

Reluctantly, I eased away and Luke took my hand. I watched as Silvia took our daughter and backed into the room. I gasped when she shifted through an invisible veil and her wings transformed to the purest of white. Her skin paled and her eyes lost all their color.
