“The darkness will bring the Omega to you. Keening and desperate. You’re in command. Control the Web, controlher.”
But I didn’t want to control her.
Perhaps I had, once.
Not anymore.
Fury grew in my chest and spread ice through my extremities as my Dust fused into poison.
Poison that swelled underneath my claws and filled my jaw.
I was also angry with myself. Back when Seifiek had been chasing his Omega, I hadn’t given much thought to what the situation might have been like for her.
I’d been too focused on myself.
My goal of becoming an Alpha had been so consuming that I hadn’t even stopped to think about what itmeantto be an Alpha.
I hated to even use my Alpha voice on Gina. I had commanded her to be still, but she’d been in a sudden state of panic the moment I had seen that flash of silver hit her soul.
I’d had to do something to give myself a moment to think.
Her skin felt so soft and delicate under my touch. I carefully stroked her back between the straps of her dress to calm her shivers.
Her skin hummed with Dust, and every time she took a breath, the darkness around us retreated and the light on her skin dimmed.
Curling my fingers into her hair, I kissed the crown of her head and breathed in her scent. I closed my eyes and let the Web come to me, to show me what had happened to bring Gina into such a state.
Visions rarely looked backward, but I was searching for what had changed. Gina’s soul had an aura to it. I could see it like a beacon inside her body, one with an aura that flickered with silver all around it. There were gaps, ones I knew were part of her fracture after mating Seifiek—but it was fuller than it had been before.
Brighter and more energetic—but also frantic.
I spotted a new piece that seemed to be broken around the edges as the sides melded into place. Within it, a vision played over and over again, showing me a memory.
One that housed a cluster of strands from the Web, indicating a significant moment in Gina’s timeline that marked a change.
One from the very first time Seifiek must have called her as his Omega.
The scent of misty fragrance still clung to the air, suggesting that she’d been near a source of water during that memory.
The fear that coursed through our linked bond, though, was unlike anything I had ever experienced.
Now that I was bonded to Gina, I felt what she felt. And right now, she was terrified.
“Tell me how to make this better,” I begged, hating how coarse and furious my voice came out, but there was no way I could hide my anger.
It should never have happened like this. I should have thought about her back when Seifiek had been hunting her down like an animal.
She tilted her head to look up at me as she clung to my chest. Her soft blue eyes shimmered with silver light.
Her need wrapped around me in the form of her breathy arousal and her touch, but I didn’t act on it. I’d pulled on some pants that had the faint scent of a human male to them. The jeans were too tight, but I’d managed it.
This had been Gina’s home in another life, meaning I was likely wearing clothes that had belonged to a previous lover.
And unlike other Alphas, I didn’t care if Gina had exes. She was a sexual creature with needs of her own. I was certainly no virgin, either.
She opened her mouth as if to give me a reply, but then Seif turned the corner and stared at us.
He wasn’t wearing anything. The tight pants had offended him. Not because they were snug, but because they smelled of another man that Gina had likely slept with in the past.
