Fear rose in my gut like a spike, cutting off my air and making my throat burn.
All of us felt the weight of the Web. It took time for it to dissipate; all the while I desperately tried to hear the sound coming from the screen.
Amell had turned it down, likely just to annoy me, but it was still audible if I strained.
“I submit to the queen,” said a masculine voice.
“As do I,”another said.
Was I hearing that correctly?
Were Seif and Axel…submitting?
While many fae races had royalty, the Fortune Fae didn’t work that way. At least, they didn’t these days. I suspected in the past, before the council and the Elders, that it was entirely possible the Fortune Fae had been ruled by a monarch.
In the other fae races, it made sense. The ruling king or queen was the only fae to have a direct line with their respective Source.
Claire, the powerful Halfling, managed to rule all five Elemental Fae Sources. Either through coronation from her royal mates or her innate inheritance, she was strong enough to keep all of the Sources in check and filter their power to her people. It was the first time in known history that a single fae ruled more than one Source.
But Claire was an abomination, something the other races were working to come to terms with because they couldn’t very well do much about it.
I was no stranger to Gina’s prophecy that had spoken of Claire’s journey. It was all but framed on every wall in the Academy and the Collegium, making her somewhat of a celebrity.
As for the Midnight Fae Realm, I knew they were due for their next royal ascension. That only happened every thousand years. I didn’t believe in coincidences, and the fact that this was happening at the same time as the fabric of the Fortune Fae structure breaking down meant this was all connected.
I just couldn’t see the pattern yet.
What am I missing?I wondered as desperation clawed at my insides.
I needed todosomething instead of just sitting here as a toy between two Alphas.
“Yes,” Roderik finally said. “That’s how it went.” He leaned back in his chair, forcing the thick wood to creak in protest. “She’s not doing a very good job of running, is she?”
“She is not,” Amell agreed.
Gina had run before. I’d fled with her from a destiny we thought would have crushed us.
Instead, it had led us onto a path that could change everything.
Gina was done with running. I knew that in my very bones.
As if in response to my desire, the Web rippled as though the edges of a pond finally reached my toes.
I mentally dipped into the cool substance of it, allowing myself to be immersed in the familiar energies.
I couldn’t read the future or follow the timelines, but this wasn’t a vision calling me.
It was my Omega.
Zeke?
My eyes flew open as her voice filled my mind. Telepathy to this extent wasn’t something we’d managed before as mates, but this wasn’t a mate-connection allowing me to hear her. This was her soul reaching out to mine through the Web. That made her incredibly powerful, especially because I was Blind.
I’m here,I replied, hoping she could hear my thoughts.
She breathed a sigh of relief, confirming that she could.
Good. I don’t know what’s happening, but I can see… everything.
