The wolf growled again, the sound more vicious this time. Whatever struggle was going on inside of him, I had a feeling which side was winning.

The one that wanted me dead.

Snarling, he took a step forward. I jerked up a dagger from a holster at my ankle, wielding it, ready to fight, even if it meant I died.

I would take him with me.

I would avenge Charlie.

The wolf leaped through the air, a beautiful display of muscle and power that left me in awe.

A streak of grey slammed into him, breaking the moment as the two wolves rolled in a flurry of fur, snapping teeth, and deep throated growls.

Another alpha, I realized, but the move hadn’t been to save me, it had been to take exert his dominance.

Only one alpha could kill me and properly resolve his rejection. The voice inside my soul informed me that this would be the weakness I could pit against them. They would fight each other for dominance, for the chance to mate again after I had been dealt with.

Because if the rejection wasn’t completed, they would all live with a shadow of connection to me forever, unable to fulfill their need, unable to mate ever again.

A punishment that made me salivate.

They all deserved it. I glanced down at the dagger, considering an alternate option that would leave them all in a helpless state.

Blood glinted against moonlight as the wolves ripped into each other, while I considered the dark possibility.

I lowered the knife, thinking of my sister Luna.

I held the power of their Goddess, at least in some form. I had to survive, to figure out how to wield it and use it against the wolves, if not for my sake, then for hers.

Leaving them to their brawl, I slipped away, rounding the tree only to run into a third alpha.

His fur glinted like steel, metallic against the moonlight. His massive beastly form took my breath away, his glory a sight to behold.

He lowered his head and bared his teeth, revealing massive fangs covered in blood and bits of pitch-black fur.

So, he’d already fought off one of them.

He launched and I reacted, that entity inside my soul giving me grace and speed to slide under his massive form, finding a hole in his defense as I struck with my blade.

He bellowed with pain, snapping at me when I ripped out my weapon and swiped at him again.

This time he caught the blade between his teeth, chomping it so hard that it shattered into bits.

Shit.

I needed another alpha to challenge him, to give me a window of opportunity to escape.

Behind him the other two alphas finished their battle, my captor panting with victory as he towered over the limp form of his victim.

He hadn’t killed him, the other wolf still breathed, but he had been gravely wounded.

My captor pinned me with a lethal stare and I backed up, only to find the other alpha at my rear.

Double shit.

A wolf black as midnight launched from the shadows without warning, blood coating his sleek fur. He crunched his jaw around my arm and dragged me into the woods, ripping a scream from my throat as my shoulder dislocated.

The other wolves began the chase, but the midnight wolf was faster.
