The wolves were responsible for all of the suffering I had experienced. These Outcasts viewed me as their savior, but where had they been when Charlie needed saving?

Or my sister?

Or any of the humans who suffered in the wake of the storms they claimed were created to findme?

I bent down, pulling the knife from my ankle holster, but he didn’t flinch. I could take his life right now. I could end this before it began.

Because my attraction to him frightened me. I felt a need building inside my core, something even stronger than I’d felt at the ceremony when I’d shattered the Crescent Orb.

The wolves snarled at my aggressive motion, but their alpha held up a hand. “If anyone disrupts, I will rip out your throats myself.”

That seemed to settle them, but it made me think twice about slicing him open. If I killed their alpha, only Althea would stand between me and a hundred sets of sharp teeth.

Assuming she didn’t kill me first. The sharp danger in her gaze warned me not to make the wrong decision.

I ran my blade over his perfect skin, drawing a red line. He didn’t move, his trust in me unnerving.

“What if I wish to take your life?” I asked.

“My life is yours to take,” he said without hesitation. His silver eyes found mine, the intensity of his gaze giving me pause. “I would do anything for you,Kaitsja.”

I froze.

“How do you know that name?” I asked, not sure if I wanted the answer.

Althea was the one who responded. “The Moon Goddess told us that Kaitsja would unite the packs. She would bring with her the heart of the Moon Goddess and be her vessel, leading us into a new era.” She tilted her chin down. “And helping us conquer a new enemy.”

I wasn’t sure if I liked the sound of that, but a chill up my spine said that I had better start paying attention.

Maybe, this was real.

I watched the blood well up along Kane’s neck where I had cut him. He closed his eyes, concentrating.

Seeing how fast Althea and I had healed, perhaps he was trying to stop his wound from healing. He wanted me to see that if I marked him, he would bear it.

Kneeling, I acted on instinct, allowing that entity inside of my soul to take over.

My teeth grazed his neck, my tongue tasting blood.

And I bit.

Kane

It was done.

Shehad marked me.

Her power swept through me like fire, making me hiss in a breath as the blessing of the Goddess descended on me without mercy.

Not a blessing perhaps, but a baptism.

My Goddess had charged me with a difficult task, one where I backed down from a fight and hid my pack from the wolves until She came to retrieve what belonged to Her.

I would have willingly fought.

I would have willingly died.

But that was not Her plan, and now I understood why She had forced me to wait.
