BONNY
“Great, Skittles again,”I grumbled as I stared at the colorful flattened balls melting on my palm.
Why was it hot as balls in here, anyway?
“Eat them and behave,” my mother chided, pushing my hand at me and glaring until I gobbled up the sugary treats.
This had to be the most bizarre day of my life.
Minus the two other awakening ceremonies my mother had dragged me to, of course.
Those were just as fucking weird, and they’d likely be just as fruitless.
Crunch.
The irony was not lost on me that these Skittles were fruit-flavored.
As if that can cover up the magical sour taste these leave in my mouth. A for effort.
Taking my time, I chewed up the sugary goodness and tried to pretend they were just regular treats, minus the tangy aftertaste.
The lingering sensation assured me that they weren’t just any regular candies. That became abundantly apparent when my extremities began to tingle. And not the good kind of tingles like when I drank soda too quickly and my eyes burned.
What a great way to ruin one of my favorite candies,I lamented. Needles spread throughout my body and the sweats began. Before my mother could see the offensive droplets, I wiped the back of my hand across my forehead.
I hated this.
Not to mention trying to unlock powers that weren’t there was a massive waste of time. Although, I’d long ago come to that conclusion before we’d walked onto Fortune Academy’s Earth Campus.
Magic hummed in the air, which reminded me of bees and only added to the sensation of a thousand stings radiating throughout my body, and my head immediately began to throb.
They know what they’re doing,my mother had told me.
I glanced around, taking note of the dwarf, the tall, scantily dressed female Dark Mage with black eyes, and what had to be a vampire sloshing a red glass of wine that was way too thick to be actual wine.
Great,I thought with a frown.I hope I don’t turn out to be a vampire.
This was the most esteemed supernatural Academy in the world, and since the realms started merging, it attracted all sorts of interrealm species.
Everyone wanted to learn from the best. Boys practically creamed their pants at the thought of catching a glimpse of one of the Champions of Calamity.
I hated to be the one to tell them that the days of the Champions were over. According to the latest news, a new era of peace had begun.
At least, that was the propaganda regarding peace. I didn’t believe it for a second.
Nothing about being force-fed poisoned skittles feltpeaceful.
When I looked across the auditorium, I saw scared teenagers and entitled, supernatural parents trying to keep their little self-fabricated thrones.
Magic was the new currency in our world, and whoever had the biggest, most powerful family with the most outrageous type of gifts made them the top dogs.
Or top witches, as it were.
My mother was basically a Queen, and that was the only reason I was standing here right now even though I didn’t have a magical bone in my body.
I couldn’t have felt more out of place.
The walls shimmered with magically projected portraits of all of the powerful women who had failed to stop Calamity’s effects, but had a fuck-load more magic than I ever would.
