Her emotions invaded my senses like the pellets of rain dropping from the ceiling. The air burned with ruby power, as if it was acting like a conduit to allow me to feel what everyone around me was feeling.
The Coven Witches were a mixture of fascination, concern, and excitement.
A spike of excitement came from the Amethyst Coven witch named Becca. “Ah! Here it is!” She pointed at the page of the floating book as an invisible shield protected it from the rain. “Female Unicorns aren’t supposed to—”
A brilliant flash of light cut her off—as did a surge of anxiety from the male who threw off his hood.
I was too distracted by his rainbow hair and the silver mark on his forehead to process what he was doing.
And whatever he was up to, it was releasing a shit ton of magic. His ruby eyes blazed as if on fire.
He snatched up the magical book from the witch, then swiped his hand through the air, releasing another flash that pushed everyone away from us on a shockwave.
Everyone except Angel and Ned. Ned had a forcefield up in preparation for the second blow, then they pushed through the crowd for me when I screamed. The Unicorn male had me in his grip as he dragged me backward.
Toward a wall of fire.
And I had a thing against being burned alive.
“Let me go!” I screamed, but he wasn’t going to matter how hard I twisted against his punishing grip.
Damn, this guy is freakishly strong for being a fru-fru Unicorn.
As if he’d heard me, his ruby eyes turned on me, burning with an intensity that shut my brain the fuck up—mostly because I forgot how to form words.
Instead, my world became raw emotion.
Rage.
Lust.
Need.
… Fear.
I blinked a few times, not sure what to do with the powerful emotions that rushed over me.
It didn’t matter, because he dragged me through the fire, changing my life forever.
RAZE
Well, that could have gone better,I thought as I struggled to get a grip on my magic that had gone completely haywire.
The female at my side was responsible for that. It was as if she’d placed my soul back in my body—while setting it on fire.
A fire that burned for her.
I clutched her wrist with one hand as I dragged her onto the charred forest floor. Our entrance had been unstable, but we’d made it in one piece.
The low light turning the leaves a deep emerald glow told me it was almost dusk—the most dangerous time to be in the forest. Beasts would scent the embers burning in the dirt at our feet and come to investigate.
It wasn’t the safest place to portal in, but I could sense how unstable my magic was right now. If we combusted, at least no one else would be harmed, so I’d made sure to avoid populated areas such as Starfall City or the Academy. No one would bother us here while I tried to get a handle on this mess.
Two voices proved me wrong on that count as a male and female tumbled through the flame portal, landing hard on the ground.
“Put it out!” the male shouted, rolling as his cloak rippled with fire.
The female—who had sprouted a mermaid’s tail—shot water at him through her fingertips, dousing him until smoke drifted through the trees.
