I wanted him alive because of the way he’d looked at me.
As if I was the only person in the whole world.
As if everything changed the moment he met me, and now he would protect me to his dying breath.
What kind of magic made feelings that powerful?
And most important of all… why was I starting to feel that way about him when he was a supernatural creature I barely even knew?
“Here,” the male said, opening one of the doors. The inside of the chamber was immediately illuminated with a soft amber glow. Rainbow prisms broke through on the walls from the windows with the light offered by the moon's soft glow.
It was nighttime by now, although I hadn’t even noticed it grow fully dark thanks to the density of the forest.
Here, though, it was as if every edge and design was intentional. Moonlight struck at the perfect angles and scattered every color imaginable across the room.
The bi-colored male ventured inside and briefly touched his forehead, which I realized was his way of releasing his magic. The slight mustiness of the room vanished, replaced by a fragrance that reminded me of citrus and melted sugar. The flavor combinations were surprisingly enticing and forced me to relax. The magical mist swept through the room, quickly stocking it with drinks, snacks, and glass bowls filled with tasty-looking treats.
“It’ll hold you over until I can get you a proper meal,” the male said, and I hesitantly gave him a nod of appreciation.
Ned helped me to get Raze on a bed. I sat on the edge and kept one hand on his chest. The skin contact helped reduce the pressure threatening to cut off my airway and luckily everyone else was too distracted to notice I was about to pass out.
The bi-colored male propped his hands on his hips. “I’ll procure the supplies you requested; as for your friends—”
“They’ll stay in a different room,” Master Nox ordered from the doorway. His silver eyes glowed with soft power, daring his brother to defy him.
Angel stiffened. “I’m not letting Bonny out of my sight.”
Nox snorted. “You don’t have a choice, my dear, and if you think I’m going to allow three potential spies alone with one of our most valued Guardians, then you’re more unintelligent than you look.”
Angel didn’t seem to appreciate the insult, but she let it slide right off her scales. Instead of commenting, she focused on the more important thing he’d just said.
He didn’t believe our story.
“Spies?” she scoffed. “Raze is the one who came toourrealm and draggedmyfriend into this mess. I promise you, none of us want to be here.”
A loud crunch sounded from the other side of the room.
We all turned to find Ned with his cheeks stocked with sweets like a chipmunk. “What?” he asked around a mouthful of orange candy.
Okay, wellmostof us didn’t want to be here.
“I’m okay, Angel, really,” I told her, attempting to put as much energy into the words as possible.
She glanced at me and raised an eyebrow.
We had our own way of communicating, mostly with eyebrow-inspired expressions. No magic required.
Such as raised eyebrows and wide eyes meantoh shit. Tell me everything right the fuck now!
And waggling eyebrows meantDid you guys kiss?Which was usually an expression I gave to Angel and not the other way around.
Right now, though, I gave her the flat eyebrow stare that saidI got this. Trust me, or I’m going to hide all your salt so you can’t get a saltwater bubble bath.
She got the message.
I needed to be alone with Raze to figure this out. Everyone here was distracting me and making me question myself.
Angel rolled her eyes and marched over to Ned, smacking him upside the head. “Come on, idiot.”
