We needed charged crystals to deal with Corruption threats, and Samuel was the Guardian in command of them. Even though he was still just a student, there hadn’t been anyone else to take on the role. The Sun House master had recently been killed. That left the duty to our highest ranking Sun Guardian stationed at the Academy.
Which resulted in the twenty-three-year-old being put in charge of Purity Artifacts.
Given we hadn’t had to deal with Corruption for years, we were all unprepared for its sudden resurgence.
Golden-eyed Unicorns greeted me at the entrance to the Sun House Training Grounds. Each segment of the campus was designated for our distinct types of magic, the ground itself blessed with that particular brand of power. It gave Unicorns with the same affiliation a boost. However, if the Unicorns were of different Houses, it made things more difficult.
My ears rang when I crossed the boundary, but this was where I’d find Samuel. I suspected Guille would be with him and something was preventing him from returning with the crystal we needed for Eli.
It also seemed to be the darkest area on campus, which was definitely concerning.
I shifted into human form and summoned myself some armor. Couldn’t be too careful.
“Status,” I ordered.
Both Guardians were in their Unicorn form, so they communicated with me telepathically.
There seems to have been a breach. We’re containing it while Samuel and Guille deal with the threat.
“Alone?” I snapped.
They jolted at my tone.
I usually kept my cool, but everything about this situation concerned me.
We were following protocol, the other Guardian said. He was one of the never students and had barely just turned twenty. In the event of a breach, only the Legion or Master is to deal with the threat. Untrained students could only make the situation worse.
He’d perfectly recited what my brother taught the students, so I couldn’t rightly take out my irritation on him.
“Yes, that’s correct.” I waved a hand. “Just… give me a Sun Stone so I can stay here before I get a migraine.” Just because I could tolerate the Sun form of Purity magic didn’t mean it sat well with me.
One of the students shifted into human form. He didn’t bother to summon clothes for himself since he would likely shift right back after he retrieved the item in question.
He ran into the small building and returned with a glowing stone on a leather strap.
Slinging the item around my neck, I relaxed as it took the brunt of the Sun Purity magic running through the ground.
I nodded my farewell. Without any time to lose, I ventured toward the growing black cloud that should have been a ball of fire.
Something had invaded Unicorn Shifter Academy.
Given my current mood, the intruder was not going to survive.
BONNY
With everyone gone,I was able to finally hear myself think.
I kept one hand on Raze’s chest and gently stroked his skin.
“Raze?” I asked, trying to wake him up, but he didn’t seem like he would become conscious again anytime soon.
His veins had turned black and spidered over his entire body, growing outward until they reached his extremities.
That can’t be good.
Following my instincts, I leaned in and tried kissing him again.
Just on the cheek,I told myself, justifying it as a test for my theory.
