Fear echoed underneath the layer of defiance that made up her mixture of emotions. As a Unicorn of the Ruby House, I specialized in empathy influence, as well as the element of fire. However, the female’s emotions seemed to invade my own, making me feel what she felt even when I attempted to shut her off.
When she glanced at me, her gaze flickering down to my waist where my pants did little to hide my arousal—I wondered if that connection went both ways.
Because I sensed her lust, too.
This was new and exciting for her. I felt her compatibility with Purity Magic, which likely meant she was a virgin.
Just like me.
However, if either of us acted on these urges, we’d lose our magic and ability to shift. That was a sacrifice I had never been willing to make.
It had always been that way for my kind.
Sex was the conduit for magic in other species.
For Unicorns, however, it blocked our power.
Permanently.
It wasn’t that I wasn’t curious or interested, but the realms were in too much danger for me to be selfish. I had a job to do—one I took extremely seriously.
Protect.
Serve.
All in secret. We didn’t seek validation or glory; that would be contrary to our nature.
Unicorns had always been the invisible force that kept the realms safe from unimaginable evil.
The realms counted on Guardian Unicorns such as myself to retain their power and to keep them safe from monsters that could devour entire worlds. Monsters they never knew existed—and we liked to keep it that way.
Sexual distractions had no place in my world, aside from procreation.
I left the breeding to the Stallions.
Which meant I had no use for these strange desires. Not unless I wished to lose my identity and my ability to protect the innocent.
That was why I had separated from my soul, but this female put everything I stood for at risk by making me feel things that should be impossible in my current state.
“We need to get you to the Elders,” I told her.
Her golden horn glittered under my realm’s light as she tilted her head.
She’s so fucking gorgeous.
Suddenly I was grateful for her friends. If we had been alone, I wasn’t sure if I could be trusted around her.
Her eyes had changed color, taking on the red hue of Ruby-affiliated magic that made her look absolutely exquisite. Either she was somehow drawing my magic from me, or she belonged to the Ruby House.
As our Queen, perhaps.
I quickly shoved the errant thought out of my mind.
What was it about this female?
What power did she possess?
And why hadn’t I felt her magic until now?
