The latter were supernaturals, based on their auras, and they definitely shouldn’t have been here.
A flash of rainbow hair through the smoky fog revealed one of our own was already in the fight.
I stopped, stunned, when I realized the limp male was Raze.
And he was gravely wounded, likely because he hadn’t changed into his Unicorn Guardian form.
But why?
Another human dragged him through the break of fire.
I stared at the feminine creature covered in Raze’s blood.
Wait… not human.
She boasted a golden horn, one so elegant and beautiful that it took my breath away.
Her long hair shimmered between a dull pink and a vibrant range of rainbow colors, as if her locks were confused about what color they should be.
The intense concentration of Purity magic wafting off of her left no question as to what she was, even if it was impossible.
She was a Unicorn.
BONNY
“Damn it, Raze,”I cursed as I attempted to drag him to safety. “You’re freaking heavy!”
Fortunately, he was unconscious, so he couldn’t say something snarky back at me.
But he wasn’t in good shape. Three massive claw wounds slashed through his abdomen and ran up his chest. I was covered in his blood, and what concerned me most was that his blood had started to turn black.
Like that damn lion had done something to him. Were its claws covered in poison or something?
Can this get any worse?
I didn’t dare turn around to see if the lion was about to turn us into fried Unicorn crisps.
Ned and Angel worked in tandem to erect a wall of water behind us, keeping it at bay. The bears escaped through the opening first.
Mama Bear turned and sniffed the air.
You’re not ready, she lamented. Then she looked into the forest, and I followed her gaze, freezing when I spotted what she was looking at.
The most beautiful creature I had ever seen glimmered through the trees. A pristine, white coat shimmered on the Unicorn. Tufts of fur curled over its golden hooves, and a similarly golden horn arched on its forehead.
It wasn’t as large as mine, but the beauty of the creature took my breath away.
Would I look like that if I shifted?
CouldI shift?
I imagined myself as a horse, hoping the transformation would happen. It would be a lot easier to transport Raze’s deceptively heavy body to safety if I was bigger and stronger, but nothing happened.
More Unicorns filtered through the forest and Mama Bear snorted.
They’ll take over from here, she informed me, then nudged her cubs to safety.Another one of your Vestals has come for you. You must find them all. Please… hurry.
With that cryptic statement, she scampered off into the forest.
