He was part angel, which, given the idea that Unicorns were pure creatures, wasn’t too surprising.

Except I hadn’t even known angels were able to procreate.

And then there was the fact that he’d just used words like “broodmare” and “Stallion.”

Nope. Does not compute.

He winced. “Sorry. I’m not used to having to explain all this from scratch. Most Unicorn Shifters come to the Academy with a basic understanding of their origins.” He picked up one of the strawberries by the stem, then offered it to me. “How about I address your first question. I don’t know how to answer because I don’t have a sexual identity that I’m aware of.” His tongue flashed out over his lower lip as his gaze dipped, longing entering his gaze. “In fact, I’ve never felt sexual desire until… you.” His gaze lifted to mine again, but I’d forgotten how to breathe.

SEBASTIAN

It was almostdawn by the time we reached the Hold, or what was more kindly referred to as the guest wing.

Unicorns hadn’t accepted guests in thousands of years, minus a few rare exceptions.

We used the guest wing for detention, the sick, and to otherwise contain anyone we needed to keep under control.

Status update,my brother’s voice ordered in my mind.

Based on the weakness of the words, he was well on the other side of campus, maybe even beyond the barrier. Yet, as the Master of the Academy, he had access to more Purity magic than most of us, allowing him to communicate over long distances as he saw fit without the aid of an artifact or hologram panel.

Professor Soleil has been Corrupted and I’m about to take him into the Hold,I said; then unwisely added,I’ll be sure to let the Elders know on my next report that you were nowhere to be found.

It wasn’t wise to provoke my brother, but I could have used his help. It’d taken every ounce of my strength to compel my Sapphire Purity magic to bind Professor Soleil’s spirit to his body when he should have died.

Guille had actually been the reason for my success. His wild unleash of raw power gave me something to work with.

But Samuel had nearly cost the Professor his life. He didn’t know Corruption’s dark secret.

It changed everything it touched, if not fully burned out. Raze would more than likely survive it, given he was a thousand years old and was from the most powerful lineage of our kind.

Professor Soleil, though, had clearly been overwhelmed by the force enough to be changed.

I wasn’t sure if he could even be saved, but perhaps he could be studied.

I didn’t tell Samuel that’s why I’d saved him instead of let him die.

Go right on ahead,my brother sneered.I’m bringing what’s left of our Guardians back alive from their failed trek to locate Khimaira.

Shifting into my human form, I frowned and hauled Professor Soleil over my shoulder.

Of course the Elders cared more about a stupid rare monster than they did about a breach. I wasn’t going to argue with Nox. He was so far up the Elders’ asses that he probably knew what they’d eaten for dinner.

Nox wanted to become an Elder one day. I was fairly certain about that. Which meant what the Elders cared about, he cared about.

I knew the Elders didn’t give two shits about the Guardians we could have lost. We’d already lost so many. What were a few more to ancient beings like the Elders?

Khimaira, though, was a one-of-a-kind.

Still, I planned on having a word with the Elders myself. If the Academy fell to Corruption, there won’t be anybody to keep their precious monsters in check.

“Do you want any help?” Samuel asked me. He adjusted the leather bag over his shoulder to get it out of the way. He made a move to help me with the Professor and offered me a hand.

“No,” I sharply barked at him. Both he and Guille kept their distance from me, but I didn’t have the patience right now to spare their feelings.

They were mere foals compared to me, but I needed them to grow up.

Fast.
