The dwarf peeled my hand off of the stone and narrowed his eyes at me as if waiting for something.
One more hiccup, and this time the bubbles finally stopped.
Silence engulfed us and I desperately wanted to be anywhere else in the world, anywhere else in all the realms, right about now.
Finally, Professor Olivia patted me on the shoulder. “I’m afraid it didn’t work, dear. You’re simply—”
My mother finished her sentence.“Human.”
BONNY
“You did not!”Angel whisper-shouted as I buried myself under blankets in my bedroom.
I was going to hide from the world for as long as physically possible.
Chatter from downstairs mulled on, informing me that I wouldn’t be allowed to stay out of sight for long. My mother had organized a party in my honor. She’d been so confident that this would be my big awakening, and now what were we going to say to all of our guests?
I was nothing more than a glorified bubble-burp machine?
“It was horrible,” I grumbled as I shoved another pillow over my face, attempting to smother myself out of existence.
Even though my migraine had come back with a vengeance, this time it seemed intent on driving a nail straight through my skull.
The nausea was competing for top bid in the misery department, though.
I wasn’t sure who was winning.
It certainly wasn’t me.
There were probably still bubbles floating around in my stomach. My abdomen gurgled and growled every few seconds, letting me know exactly how it felt about the poisoned Skittles I’d eaten.
Angel ripped the pillow and blankets off of me, her features wound up in a delighted smile. I squinted at my bedroom lights I’d insisted we keep at half-power. Luckily my family believed in dimmer switches.
“I would have paid good magic to have seen that,” she said, playfully slapping my leg. “I can’tbelieveyou didn’t invite me!”
Rolling my eyes, I sat up against the headboard and began plucking at the threads of a decorative pillow. “It was at Fortune Academy. You couldn’t have gotten in anyway, even if Ihadinvited you.”
She drew in a long gasp. “TheFortune Academy? And you burped up bubbles? Holy shit. What did your mom say?”
Angel excitedly blinked at me while I contemplated the look of disappointment I recalled on my mother’s face.
Angel was everything I wasn’t.
She was beautiful, especially now that she’d been awakened as a mermaid shifter. She was a water sign, so that really didn’t surprise me.
I’d never heard of mermaid shifters in particular, but there were a lot of new supernaturals popping up after the Rise. They were apparently different than reborn mermaids that never walked on land, and had been a myth to the supernatural community until a few recent sightings.
Angel’s impossibly blue eyes glittered as if the ocean roared in her twinkling irises. Tiny scales adorned her cheeks like pink blush, and small gills ran up the sides of her neck, flaring every few moments.
Her hair always appeared a little wet and shimmery since her awakening, but it was a good look on her.
And plus the silky strands had turned bright purple. I was super jealous. I had to die mine pink.
“My mom called mehuman,” I said, frowning. I was supposed to be proud of that, but being around Angel right now made me feel like shit.
I went back to plucking the strands on my pillow and closed one eye to help stem the migraine.
I don’t want super special powers, anyway.
