I also missed Kane, but I didn’t speak that out loud. It was his magic that had brought all of this on me.
It was the power of the Moon Goddess that had brought the Hunters to my world.
It was my fate to reunite the five packs that had birthed the Storms.
This power was a curse and a part of me wanted to throw it into this pit that threatened to swallow me whole.
“Shh,”the Goddess said as she continued to stroke my hair. The pain ebbed as she did so and a faint silvery light shone down on us.“The equinox is almost here. While I can’t take you home… they can.”
Sniffling, I looked up to see that the empty sky wasn’t so barren anymore.
A brilliant High Moon shone overhead and glowed with the power of my realm.
Five silhouettes broke the sky before it as if they were constellations that could block out the brilliance.
Kane stepped through the sky first, drifting down on moonbeams to reach me.
He was both beautiful and devastating. His body shone with light, only for portions of it to be blocked out by fresh, red blood and inky black lines.
“Kaitsja, my love, I’ve found you,” he said with his voice strong and sure just as I always remembered it.
Love emanated from him as he held out a hand streaked with blood.
What had it cost him to find me here?
“Wefound you,” another male voice corrected, then I recognized one of the alphas from the cave appear at his side, similarly wounded and covered in fresh cuts and slash marks.
Four more followed until they all held out their hands to me.
It seemed that Kane had formed some alliances while I had been gone, but I didn’t question it. Instead, I looked up at the Goddess who held me. She smiled and nodded.
“Go to them, sweet daughter. The merging of our realm and Hell’s Heart won’t last long.”
I blinked at her. “What about you?”
She released me, then folded her hands.“I’ll always be inside of you… but I’ve been drained. There is another enemy who seeks our destruction and I can’t protect you this time.”She lowered her chin as she began to fade.
“It’ll be up to you…
Unite the packs.”
Claim your alphas.”
And face your foe… before it’s too late.”
The ground rumbled on her last word as she shattered like a mirror.
“Hurry, Kaitsja!” Kane urged and I stumbled into his chest.
All of my alphas wrapped their arms around me as the light of the High Moon broke through the heat of this place.
And sent my bones on fire.
I screamed as the pain of the shift overtook me and the Goddess exploded, releasing the last of her power to give me the boost I needed to return home.
The heat of my prison dissipated, replaced with the formation of forests and leaves.
My cries turned into howls as my wolf slammed into my soul, taking over as she finally came back to life.
