All of them were fighting a single male with white hair who was a full head taller than the rest. He was holding his own, though, even against their impressive speed.
They hadn’t even managed to touch him yet.
Ronin held up a hand and worked a Hunter’s spell. A crystal hanging around his wrist glowed red.
Usually it required pain and blood to activate a Dark Mage’s artifact that was specifically designed for Hunters. I raised a brow with question at the male.
His jaw flexed as if he was in pain. That’s when I noticed his wolf scar begin to bleed.
“It’s infused with poison,” he informed me.
I nodded with understanding. While Hunters could heal from almost any injury, ones of a magical nature sometimes left behind more than just a mark.
Rubbing my fingers over the scar across my throat, I knew that those remnants weren’t always physical. I would have gladly suffered from a poisonous claw mark rather than the emotional burden of my wound.
Alas, that was a memory for another tale.
This day was about the wolves… and right now, I had no idea what kind of shit we were getting ourselves into.
“I sense magic from all of the major packs,” Ronin said, squinting in the distance. He lowered his hand and the power in his crystal faded. He turned to Xenos and gave him a nod. “Wolves tend to keep to their own packs, so yes, it seems that the corruption is causing a greater disturbance than we realized.”
“Are we too late?” Xenos wondered, looking at me.
“No such thing,” I surmised.
Lily had taught me that no matter what, it was never too late to fix what was broken.
Xenos grinned that feral grin of his. “Then it’s your call, Dante.”
I was glad that I had Xenos with me, although Logan would have been more useful in this instance.
These were Logan’s ancestors. His wolf came from this sect that worshipped a Moon Goddess. Even though he was back home with our mate now, and very different from what I’d observed of the wolves here so far, he would still understand their ways better than the Hunters would.
Supposedly, the Hunters had faced these wolves before.
It would have been nice if I could have remembered it, but I still hadn’t recovered all of my memories. Lily had restored as much as she could, but she said that I was blocking her from restoring everything.
Maybe I’d discover the reason why I was hiding from a piece of myself while I was here.
This place was unlike any realm I’d ever seen.
And I’d visiteda lotof realms.
The moon of this world behaved strangely and held a shit ton of magic. My skin still tingled from its effect as it had blared over us during the night. Even the shadow of the forest canopy hadn’t been enough to keep me completely away from its touch.
It was a wonder that humans survived in a place like this.
Regardless, Xenos had said that the full moon made the wolves too unpredictable and powerful, which was why we’d waited until sunrise to approach any of the natives.
The gold burned with inner Hellfire and an arrow of flame pointed toward the shifters that were at each other’s throats.
“Are you sure they’re all alphas?” I asked, referring to what Xenos had said earlier. He’d been scouting longer than I had and based on the shifters’ size and behavior, these were the leaders of all the packs.
Logan was an alpha, so I knew that would make them formidable.
Although he hadn’t grown up here under such a moon, so perhaps these alphas were even worse.
“Yep,” my general confirmed.
