Her throat worked as she swallowed. She curled her shoulders and bowed her head. “Of course not, Alpha. I simply worry for the Moon Guardian’s safety if she should venture outside of the barrier.”
“Her alphas are here, with us. She has no reason to go outside now.”
Kane’s response startled me.
Did he not realize I had a family and a home to return to?
Perhaps he didn’t. I was just the fruition of a prophecy to him.
There was so much he didn’t know about me.
But I was going to use that to his advantage.
I guarded my thoughts, imagining a wall around them as I projected what I wanted him to hear.
You’re right, Kane. I have nowhere else to go.
He glanced at me, then softened as he wound his hand back over my neck.
“Then I release you, my Kaitsja. Be free.”
The echo of the unsnapping of my collar broke through the caves.
I took a step forward.
Then another.
Following my nose to the myriad of scents that had hinted my nose before.
Because those scents belonged to the other alphas.
And I intended to kill them… then I would run.
DASH
“Fuck,” I groaned as I leaned forward, only to be stopped by a chain attached to a collar around my neck.
“Don’t try to move,” Shadow’s voice warned me.
It hurt to open my eyes, but I managed it and spotted the alpha picking apart a moon blossom as he ate each petal one by one. He sat on a rock and his chain dangled down his back, the other end of it disappearing into the wall.
But it was the Moon Blossom he was eating that held my interest.
Because they were all over this cave.
So many…
Moon Blossoms were rare and sacred—meaning we rarely resorted to eating them, but the Goddess would forgive us for trying to survive.
Although based on Ryker’s scowl, he didn’t agree with that sentiment.
Luckily he was too badly injured to move.
His collar hid the worst of the wound that the Outcast had given him, but blood steadily leaked down his naked chest and soaked the waistband of a pair of sweatpants.
I really didn’t see the reason why they’d clothed us if we were prisoners. Did they care about modesty in the Outcast Pack? An odd sentiment for a group of shifters.
However, based on my memory from the pack teachings, they weren’t all exactly wolves like the rest of us.
